My mountain pony
Feb 11th, 2017 at 12:25pm

As best as I can work out he'll be 33 this year and his health has been worrying me for a while.
My neighbour who was a harness trainer thinks it's just old age.

Before he came here he was in a backyard with no stable. And I guess because of that he would never go in one or even stay in the shade.
But if there are any horse people here (scoot?) I've got him on a supplement of mash, molasses, cool calm nuts & chaff twice a day, though I leave out the mash on the second feed generally depending on the weather.
He seems to be gradually putting some weight back on.
With the heat wave everything has and will again dry out though tthere's quite a bit of green pick.

Thoughts anybody?

I don't know much about horses, but I assume that when they get old they would need more protection from the elements of bad weather. Can you hose him down during the heat?

Is he close enough to the house so you can keep an eye on him?

He's a free spirit and sometimes I have to walk all over to find him.
Plus it's nearly 30 years since he was in harness or used to a halter and it's a major effort to hold him now. He'll walk up to you for a pat if he feels like it and of course he comes for feed.

Chez Bogarde is a discipline free zone.

Do you understand now why it's necessary for me to delete posts that make no contribution to the discussion but are the graffiti of bored, semi-literate halfwits?

hi bogarde.
33 is very old and he may not go on for much longer.
when he tries to eat any sort of hard feed, does he seem to spill a lot out the side of his mouth.
a lot of older horses teeth make it hard for them to chew.
also , it may be worth giving him a worm with some equimax (about $12).
apart from that, he may not go on much longer.
generally richer foods can upset horses guts, dont feed them lawn clipping. i used to feed them a bit of rice and mollases to fatten them.
a lot of the mares mix pellets are fairly kind to the gut as well.
good luck

Thanks very much scoot. One of the girls at the produce store was telling me about an ex-police horse they had that lived into its 40s.
