Quote:
.......It takes six steps.
First, you start with soil. We identify what nutrition the soil lacks.
Then we identify what species we should be growing in this soil, depending on climate.
We then identify locally abundant biomass available in that region to give the soil whatever nourishment it needs.
This is typically an agricultural or industrial byproduct — like chicken manure or press mud, a byproduct of sugar production — but it can be almost anything.
We’ve made a rule that it must come from within 50 kilometers of the site, which means we have to be flexible.
Once we’ve amended the soil to a depth of one meter, we plant saplings that are up to 80 cm high, packing them in very densely — three to five saplings per square meter.
The forest itself must cover a 100-square-meter minimum area.
This grows into a forest so dense that after eight months, sunlight can’t reach the ground. At this point, every drop of rain that falls is conserved, and every leaf that falls is converted into humus.
The more the forest grows, the more it generates nutrients for itself, accelerating growth.
This density also means that individual trees begin competing for sunlight — another reason these forests grow so fast.

The forest needs to be watered and weeded for the first two or three years, at which point it becomes self-sustaining.
But after that, it’s best to disturb the forest as little as possible to allow its ecosystem — including animals — to become established................

yes, this is about what I want.
I've planted a few forest/gardens before.
They are a lot of work and preparation is the key.
particularily soil preparation

exactly ... I've never understood why anyone would plant a tree in their backyard that was useless when the option was there to plant a fruit tree that they could harvest.

I deliberately have my backyard with no trees.

Trees wreck houses & sewer pipes & all other infrastructure.
They block light making the area too dark & cold  - especially in winter.
( One of my friends has had to pay out $42K to repair the damage done by trees in his front yard.)

Also - they block your neighbors view.

yes , got to be VERY careful about planting trees.

Not having any is quite a good idea.
Many shrubs grow quite high enough.

Any tips on where to plant trees? Are they generally safer the further they are from the house?

I doubt any house has been damaged by a fruit tree!

Plant well away from the house so the roots don’t get into sewerage lines, back yard not front yard.

The roots grow very long so they will go under the house
& crack the brickwork.

Roots, apart from citrus, tend to stay within the drip line of that tree.

You are stupid enough to fall for a lying charlatan, Booby, so why not plant apple and cherry trees in your backyard? More “survival” food for you. LOL!

Also, if the roof overhangs, it tends to create a strip of much drier dirt around the base of the house. Unless you have a leaky pipe or drainage issues, the roots ought to stay away.

Not hard to manage trees.

In my new block I will plant 20 fruit trees with another half dozen or so later. Eat some fruit fresh, preserve some, make booze with some and just sell some. With the strawbale house I will be locking up a heap of carbon!

growing up we had 2 nectarine trees (1 white 1 yellow), 3 fig trees (2 black 1 green), a lemon, a 2 peach trees and a grape vine in a 500m2 yard .. they never caused a problem with anything. We also had a prickly pear along the rear fence that not only tasted delicious, but was useful at stopping undesirables from jumping the fence.

use leather gloves on one hand to handle them, the other hand you use only to handle the knife and the fruit after you've removed the skin. Cut the ends off first, then slice down the skin on one side and peel it away. the fruit should just roll out. When you cut the skin off, try not to cut through the thorns, but rather cut around them. If you go through the thorns you tend to push them into the fruit and they'll lodge into your tongue or throat. Green ones aren't ripe, look for the red colouring. They're well worth the effort.

So don’t plant those! The second advantage of fruit trees is that they are (mostly) deciduous so you get shade in summer and light comes through in winter. Plant some Booby, more “survival food” LOL!

God you really take the cake, don’t you? Buying all that bloody survival food junk. Bet mice are having a field day in your house! LOL!

Me too.  Tree leaves also create havoc in gutters and I have seen what can happen when a tree falls on a house in a storm.  There were a few trees in the garden of our house when we bought it but they're all gone now, replaced by bushes, mostly flowering ones.  There are plenty of gardens around us that have lots of trees, mostly gum trees and pine trees and quite a few well over 30 metres high.  I like seeing trees, but I don't like them near the house.

Quote:
...........
Here’s how it works. It takes six steps.

1. First, you start with soil. We identify what nutrition the soil lacks.

2. Then we identify what species we should be growing in this soil, depending on climate.

4. Once we’ve amended the soil to a depth of one meter, we plant saplings that are up to 80 centimeters high, packing them in very densely — three to five saplings per square meter.

5. The forest itself must cover a 100-square-meter minimum area. This grows into a forest so dense that after eight months, sunlight can’t reach the ground. At this point, every drop of rain that falls is conserved, and every leaf that falls is converted into humus. The more the forest grows, the more it generates nutrients for itself, accelerating further growth. This density also means that individual trees begin competing for sunlight — another reason these forests grow so fast.

6. The forest needs to be watered and weeded for the first two or three years, at which point it becomes self-sustaining. After that, it’s best to disturb the forest as little as possible to allow its ecosystem, including animals, to become established........

I have put in these sorts of gardens before

I prefer fruit trees. Not quite a forest but I will plant a productive hedgerow around the fruit tree area. Bay trees, rosemary, berries, semi–woody herbs like sage and native plants. Be a windbreak, harbor useful birds and insect to predate pests etc.

Total bull!

I've got a forest in my backyard and it emerged from a sandbank. If there's a massive storm and a large tree falls - it will be cushioned by the smaller trees underneath and around it. All their roots intertwine so it's unlikely that any of them will get uprooted - unless of course there's an earthquake.

I was googling pictures of rain forests not long ago and found a picture of my garden or so I thought until I looked closely and saw there was a fern in the picture that wasn't mine.

Lone trees in a garden might cause problems - but a lot of them don't. If a branch falls - it falls on another tree or some foliage.

The smaller trees won't do much cushioning. If the larger tree hits it at all it would probably smash straight through.

The largest tree is the oldest tree. It's had borers for decades, so if it does fall - hopefully it will break in half and just crumble. The massive mulberry tree beside it catches all the fallen branches. Over many years the electricity contractors have cut off all the branches on the street side - so as it's lopsided it can only fall one way - fingers crossed.

We 'overplan' things. So it'll be a long time till anything happens.

Research so far is going well.
One of our friends is a gardener, she used to part own a nursery.
Had a talk to her tonight. She was very good. Will buy her a coffee next time and continue the chat.

The basic idea so far is :

1/Plan a whole lot.

2/ Plan more.

3/ Plan where the mild landscaping will go. Swales, natural paths.

4/ Have a plan of where every specific plant will go.

5/ Estimate the materials required.

6/ Hire a dingo/kanga with various attachments or hire a local guy to do it.

7/ Take a week off work.

It won't happen. Four trees per square metre is impossible.

Does anyone have good treatments for saline lawns? People have been treading pool water over my lawn fetching beach balls for their pool next door. Their yard looks worse than mine, but the chlorine seems to be spreading with each rainfall.

I'm aware of things like gypsum to undo the clay build up. But I don't want to keep trying to treat my lawn with potting mix. Other fertilizers are just a waste to throw around, at least until I have removed the salts from the lawn.

Suggestions?

Chlorine is alkaline? Gypsum won't help it's for acid and clay soils, grab a soil tester and test the soil Ph.

Salt kills of plant life. Especially grass. I left the hose running last night to flood the front yard and wash away any salty grass. May take a long time.

Cooch is salt tolerant. I have sen it growing on small coastal swamp Islands about 10cm above the high tide mark, just behind the mangroves. The salt kills everything else and the cooch thrives. I have seen gardens watered with slightly salty groundwater that have thick cooch and never need weeding.

Good progress is being made here.
Have a site plan and getting a list of trees to attract butterflies, bees and birds.

We have about 150 M2 of lawn to be redesigned.

Get a guy with a dingo/kango to come in and dig it up to a depth of at least 600 mm.
They said up to 1M deep.

Buy a few 16 KG bags of Organic Xtra and get him to dig this in also.

Shape it with swales for another frog pond and 'natural' paths.

Put sand over the frog pond site and about 20M3 of mulch over all the rest of the new yard........
Might get the dingo man back for that.

yes, just that I don't know what tree it will be off.

Pine chips are not good for the soil.
I doubt gum chips are very beneficial either.

tee tree mulch or sugar cane are both good for the soil

might just rake some good mulch into the top layer of loosened soil

As a novice and not a male who plans things on paper - you can have a healthy garden and lawn at very little expense. I didn't throw any food scraps, lawn clippings or fallen leaves in the bin. I used to rake them over and into the sand, but I don't have to now. I have bore water which helped years ago, but I don't need it anymore. The lawn and plants can survive for months without being watered.

Maybe you could try keeping your lawn a little longer when you mow. Don't throw the clippings out - rake them back over the sparse spots. Rake some leaves up also - and mix them into the clippings. In twelve months the overflow from your neighbours pool mightn't affect your grass as much if there is something that can absorb it before it gets to the main part of the lawn.

Natural mulch is a poultice for most gardens.

Don't worry about what tree it is from. Just think of it as a massive source of free fertiliser and soil conditioner. If you are really worried about the flavour of it, let it decompose in the corner for a while. I find it's ability to kill the weeds by smothering them just as useful as the long term benefits to the soil.

If pine chips were not good for the soil, they would not use them on commercial gardens.

The mulch/humus material might make a big difference.

Good gardeners have told me to add nitrogen under fresh mulch as the decomposing process takes nitrogen away from the soil .

As a kid I used to walk through natural forests, underfoot was soft and spongy. These were beech or other hardwood forests. lovely places.

Under pine trees the soils is hard and dead.
they were like deserts underneath.

Quote:
................Our mulch is left to age or “cook” as we refer to it for three months prior to selling. During this cooking process, our mulch will reach temperatures well above 70 degrees even in the middle of winter! It’s also turned over several times. Fresh Forest Mulch contains tannins which are extremely harmful to young plants and even mature trees. Fresh Forest Mulch will absorb valuable nitrogen from your soil – properly aged forest mulch will not. Throughout this 3 month process, harmful tannins are leached from the mulch and unsightly leaves are turned into compost. The end result is a product which has a pleasant earthy smell and feel, allowing your plants to simply flourish!...............

I knocked on his door and introduced myself and explained the problem, and asked him to cut down his tree. He told me he was from the bush and that they shoot people like me and then drive over them in a ute. What a jolly fine chap. He did however cut down his tree.

Just mentioning that people get really obnoxious when their overhanging trees become a problem

I have given up on the idea of planting fruit trees this year. Once the soil has softened a bit after rain someone will rotary hoe the block and spread gypsum. That will be left over winter to break down the clay. Hopefully the same guy can harrow the soil in spring—I will have quite enough work to do as it is! Cost maybe $200 per pass over the block.

Then I might spread and lightly dig in cow poo and compost, trace elements or rock dust, dolomite and some blood and bone over the back half of the block where the fruit trees will go and mulch the whole lot then leave it like that for summer. Will use FD’s tip re getting tree loppers to dump their woodchips on my block and use that for the mulch. I like the price of free mulch!

I will measure where the holes for the fruit trees will be and dig them out and fill them with the same compost etc mix. Plenty of humus then for the fruit trees.

Re the destructive power of tree roots, bah!

I had an orange tree a metre or so off the back verandah. No damage done to the cement making the verandah floor. Now a dwarf Valencia and a dwarf blood orange tree are even closer—no damage. Citrus trees have long shallow roots, I know! I had to dig out one from the orange tree to put my pond in but under the verandah there is no moisture and no problem from the roots.

Don’t plant a Norfolk Pine tho, problems!

My neighbor's old and large oak tree hangs dangerously over part of my house. The fat bastard had the limbs trimmed over his own house but not mine ...

I once had a neighbor in Perth who was a farmer. I had never previously seen or met him. I approached him about a noxious tree in his yard that was dropping sticky leaves which clumped together in resinous clumps, stuck to the paving and stuck to dogs and cats.

Yeah, this fat bastard is like that:  he has seen me over the years cleaning up the mess his tree leaves on top of my house and all on that side and probably enjoys watching me bust my ass ...

Any tree parts/fruit that overhangs your property line is yours, you may have if lopped off at the property line. In Au anyway. I believe I've read you own the airspace over your yard in the US and can shoot down drones.

Edit: I just googled and it's pretty grey about drones in the US, people get off for doing it but the FAA says you can't.

Just ordered 8 cider apple trees and four cherry trees. Will order more fruit trees, eating & cooking apples, plums and citrus (can just manage citrus in Tassie.)

Guy who rotary hoed my block and spread claybreaker will get them and put them in pots and look after them until I plant them Aug 2018.

Shitload of work to do first, might even get a soil analysis done. Reckon a few bags of dolomite to sweeten what I think is very acid soil.

The other thing I will do once the soil is under control is plant a hedgerow all around the parts where I will plant my fruit trees. Part windbreak, part barrier part environment for predatory insects and birds to nest and pick of pesky bugs. Chickens to run under the apple trees (cider and eating/cooking) and they will eat any codling moth, kick them out for a couple of months before the apples ripen so the apples fall on clean ground.

Native edible Tassie fruits are listed on this site:
http://www.potn.com.au/edible_plants.html

I will plant bay trees, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, rosemary, sage, oregano etc etc as well in the hedgerow. Stretches of hedgerow mainly natives.

Will plant black hawthorn aka sloes, sloe gin  Smiley

Got me a couple of banana trees.... moisture suckers and provide fruit (I don't like bananas but the pre-school across the lane provides morning tea for the kids).  Also the lemon is a must and the lime - also got a peach/nectarine combo that was a gift... last one like that the nectarine died off down South and the peach thrived and gave good fruit.

Next for the grapes, passion fruit and maybe an olive or two... cherries if I can keep the bugs off - birds always love the places the ex and I change around... full of shrubs and trees so they can hide from predators and free food , and all are welcome as long as they like eating bugs.  No chooks here - too smelly and not enough room, and they dig up your tree roots if you're not careful.

No chooks until the cider apple trees are well established. if you lay down chicken wire then chooks can’t scratch.

I have a banana tree and despite the Ice Age hysteria from Sir Booby de Louse it is doing well: no fruit last year but three bells on it this year. I chopped down some suckers getting too close to the verandah early last year.

My chooks will move and scratch around a big part of my block but I will protect very young fruit trees/shrubs/herbs.

Don’t worry, codsy, I have kept chooks and know how deelish free range eggs are, far better than any you can buy. Chooks are carnivorous by choice and even eat mice and baby rats. But will have to set limits, is all.

I made cages for trees out of dog fence (large square mesh) wrapped in chicken wire. I expect it would work for chickens.

It is the tree roots is the problem, until the tree is some years old.

Just put chicken mesh on the ground to stop chickens scratching.

What your cages might have prevented was rabbits nibbling the tender bark of the saplings which would kill the tree.

Won't the grass grow through it, making it impossible to get it out?

It was mainly for possums, children etc.

I put a compost bin in my front yard under the tree to try and get it to regrow and flower after Cyclone Marcia's damage and the problems from soil damage I did, just prior. For 2 years, the tree was regaining its structure and stength. But nothing too awesome. I put the compost bin in the backyard for the winter months, last month. My front tree only just starts flowering this week.

Well can pull it up in bits or have a weedmat under the wire, etc.

My way works better. The ones I have must be at least ten years old and have been reused many times on tree seedlings, tomatoes etc.
