No chooks until the cider apple trees are well established. if you lay down chicken wire then chooks can’t scratch.

I have a banana tree and despite the Ice Age hysteria from Sir Booby de Louse it is doing well: no fruit last year but three bells on it this year. I chopped down some suckers getting too close to the verandah early last year.

oh nooooooooooooo monk.. all chooks scratch...

I wont be popping in for a cuppa when you are established if you stop chooks from scratching.. bwahhhhhhhh

My chooks will move and scratch around a big part of my block but I will protect very young fruit trees/shrubs/herbs.

Don’t worry, codsy, I have kept chooks and know how deelish free range eggs are, far better than any you can buy. Chooks are carnivorous by choice and even eat mice and baby rats. But will have to set limits, is all.

I made cages for trees out of dog fence (large square mesh) wrapped in chicken wire. I expect it would work for chickens.

It is the tree roots is the problem, until the tree is some years old.

Just put chicken mesh on the ground to stop chickens scratching.

What your cages might have prevented was rabbits nibbling the tender bark of the saplings which would kill the tree.

Won't the grass grow through it, making it impossible to get it out?

It was mainly for possums, children etc.

I put a compost bin in my front yard under the tree to try and get it to regrow and flower after Cyclone Marcia's damage and the problems from soil damage I did, just prior. For 2 years, the tree was regaining its structure and stength. But nothing too awesome. I put the compost bin in the backyard for the winter months, last month. My front tree only just starts flowering this week.

Well can pull it up in bits or have a weedmat under the wire, etc.

My way works better. The ones I have must be at least ten years old and have been reused many times on tree seedlings, tomatoes etc.
