Its not uncommon for accused in custody to refuse to attend court hearings, they are of course charged with the offences before they attend court so he remains in custody with a possible contempt of court charge if the magistrate so decides. He can also be ordered to attend forcibly in chains although that is uncommon.

Yes, he's been charged with five counts of murder.

This must be a typo, though:

Why do you think August is a typo?????????

correct. Nothing abnormal about an 8 month adjournment. Comes off his sentence anyway.
