An Australian Identity Card ... good or bad?

link

I can see cheating and deception written all over this idea.

I personally knew an ethnic workmate who brought a relative out here from Yugoslavia to have an operation on his own medicare card. Apparently it was common practice.

Also getting prescription medicines from their doctors on the strength of their Medicare cards and then boxing these to send to overseas relatives for sale in their local towns and villages. Another common fraud upon the Australian host people.

An ID card would have to be produced to link all the person's data, and explain the person's circumstance in every detail. If not, it would simply be a driver's license. There is no point if it is not the preliminary to the "fait accompli" that requires its possession at all times.

Hanson is dead wrong about this one. Its just more regulation, and the worst kind. But there will be strong support from those who make a living in the formulation of new regulations. No amount is enough, because if there ever was an end, they'd be out of the their comfortable, tax-payer funded jobs.

I can hear the bleating now, "Oh, but it is for your own good."

The UK has an estimated 50,000 illegal immigrants wandering around the country like a ghost army of Muslims, and after the Rudd/Gillard years we have a few thousand incognitos here as well.

Driver's Licences are notoriously easy to counterfeit, and so are consequently useless as a credible ID, but then on the otherhand, a carefully designed ID card - with attached papers - would account for just who everyone here in Australia is.

A national ID card would help the authorities to keep track of released prisoners, parolees, paedophiles, et al.

Hundreds of Muslims have been leaving our airports headed for joining up with ISIS ... and then a lot of them have been returning through our airports - all on dodgy passports.

A no-nonsense National ID card that's almost impossible to copy would be a great help to our various police agencies.

Exactly.

When they point it at you, you'll freeze in fear.

Well said.

But then again, where there's a will there's a way. HSC exam questions are routinely stolen and sold off to interested parties.

I used to pay $32 a year to have a silent number - (I have no idea what I'm being charged now) - and the telephone company bastards sold off my details to call-centre advertising firms with the result that I ended up having to buy an answering machine in order to be able to vet each call that comes in.

Perhaps thumb-print or iris-recognition technology is the only secure ID method possible. These will arrive, and it's only a matter of time before we are all on a data bank like the FBI has of its citizens. Even Marla is in the FBI's data bank from a parking ticket, or being in arrears with her rent, or having accidentally started a fire in her room with the junk she smokes.

Police have the power to ask people to remove face coverings for identification purposes.

An artificial knee or your hip? Don't tell me it was one of those bolts through your belly-button?

The only ID that would be foolproof (fingers crossed) would be your iris, a thumb-print, or a voice thingy.
