Hinchinbrook Shire Council: Stop Using 'Time-Bombed' Dingoes to Kill Feral Goats

by: Laura Goldman

Members of the Hinchinbrook Shire Council in Australia have come up with an incredibly cruel way to help save an island in the Great Barrier Reef. To get rid of the 300 feral goats that are eating endangered rainforest plants on Pelorus Island, the council decided to release male dingoes on the island to kill them.

But that's not the worst part of this terrible plan. The dingoes have been implanted with little time bombs--1080 pesticide poison pellets--that will kill them in two years. Death by 1080 is slow and painful. Those poor, doomed dingoes could suffer for days.

"Previous exercises such as trying to trap them or trying to shoot them proved pretty impossible because of the nature of the terrain," Mayor Ramon Jayo told Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News. "…So, when the boys came up with this idea, we just thought, 'Well that's perfect.' This is nature. I mean, the dingo is a predator. The goat is a source of the dingo's affections. So, we believe that we'll just put nature together and that'll sort out a problem."

This idea is far from perfect. Although it was approved by the Australian government, RSPCA Queensland says it was never informed about the plan, which it said "raised grave animal welfare issues."

This despicable plan needs to be stopped. Please sign and share this petition urging the Hinchinbrook Shire Council not to use time-bombed dingoes to kill feral goats on Pelorus Island.

Colour me surprised.

You're filling in blanks. I'm not joking or finding animal suffering funny but I can see the big picture and it's for the greater good of the environment.

The tweeting Bondi cigar gets his kicks by watching others suffer.

That's why he continues to post in this forum.

The Tweeting Bondi Cigar's big picture:

I don't like 1080 and would worry about the carnivores and carrion eaters the clean up their carcasses. If the goats need to go, they should be shot. Perhaps the council could team up with SSAA or give the army some rough terrain practice.

I saw a news story on this a while ago. The vegetation is so dense the goats can't be seen from the air and the terrain is so step it's impenetrable on foot. It's the best option.

You just saw the petition and didn't put any thought into it.
I saw a feature story about this on the ABC about 6 months ago. Look at the terrain Smiley

It's not "the best option". It's cruelty beyond belief that will damage the food chain.

Better than helicopters Smiley
Oh wait, maybe they should spray the island with agent orange first so they can see them.

No. If they are going to release dingos they should release older ones of the same gender ... or desexed.

Let them live out their natural life.

You have no imagination at all, do you?

Oh wait, you are ok with time bombing sentient creatures with an agonising death to leave behind contaminated carcasses for the food chain to be effected by.

What did i expect?
