Men are drawn to pleasure, and to virtue
Jan 14th, 2017 at 7:51pm

Men are drawn to [sensual] pleasure, and to virtue [that we recognise in others].

It is easy to understand why men are drawn to pleasure,     ...but why so, to respect for virtue ?

Why are we so concerned about our 'reputation' [in the eyes of others] ?

And why do we hate it, when others think badly of us, think badly of our character ?

Is that 'care' [in us], a weakness, another vanity of man ?

Proverbs 22:1
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

Ecclesiastes 7:1
A good name is better than precious ointment.....

Ecclesiastes 7:15
All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
16  Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
17  Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

Ecclesiastes 1:1
The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2  Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
3  What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

You are talking in very general terms here. Virtue is a debatable subject. There is no virtue in being dower and humorless, as in the Abrahamic religions. Lets see you quote some funny bits from the Bible.

When it comes to reputation, it can be vanity, and in former times, when respectability was so paramount in society, a great deal of it was. And that shows you how bloody small minded people can be.

We are fortunate that there have always been some people of excellent reputation who would point out how hollow reputation can be.

But don't expect too much of people. Like any resource, there is a small percentage of refined product to an awfully big heap of slag.

That is an interesting observation, coming from a religious fanatic who refers to all indigenous people as "BOONGS."

That's the influence of the corruptness of women in his life, the legacy of Eve.

Pleasure is more a 'herd' goal. While the Utilitarians may have some good points, pleasure is based on 'shallow emotionalism'. It's really only a momentary thing unless attached to a higher vision or principle.

Virtue comes from Latin. Vir means man. The original meaning of virtue was applied to the military class due to being 'manly' in battle. Once the perimeter of a town/village/city/country is protected and peace settles in, virtue then becomes associated with uprightness, civility, honourable and trustable - those traits required for a society to function. Moving along to the post-modern era (today) it's become so distorted that it could mean anything.
