Men are drawn to [sensual] pleasure, and to virtue [that we recognise in others].
It is easy to understand why men are drawn to pleasure, ...but why so, to respect for virtue ?
Why are we so concerned about our 'reputation' [in the eyes of others] ?
And why do we hate it, when others think badly of us, think badly of our character ?
Is that 'care' [in us], a weakness, another vanity of man ?
Proverbs 22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
Ecclesiastes 7:1 A good name is better than precious ointment.....
Ecclesiastes 7:15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness. 16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself? 17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
Ecclesiastes 1:1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. 2 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. 3 What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
