The story I heard was that the Q.land government started charging members of the public for identifying pests.

So people stopped sending in samples, this gave the RIFA time to get established before the panic button was pushed.

WA has set up PADIS to act as a garden enquiry service.
They do give gardening advice (well in 2005 at least) but what they are doing is acting as a great surveillance system for introduced pests and diseases.

All states should be doing that as a free service if we ever want to keep nasty stuff out.

One thing for sure is AQIS is "ornamental" when it comes to protecting our borders from incursions.

Ornamental = useless

Seriously this one is where we should all be working together, left right and centre, all states and the commonwealth.

This time its RIFA, but until AQIS start doing there job there will be many more incursions.

This is     racism    against Fire Ants!

Why are you all getting so hepped up!

Can't the critics of Fire Ants see, and understand that Fire Ants [like us] just want to live their lives in safety.

Can't the critics of Fire Ants see, and understand that if we leave the Fire Ants alone, the Fire Ants will not harm us.

Can't you all see that trying to destroy Fire Ants is genocide against Fire Ants !

Fire Ants were introduced to QLD through the Port of Brisbane 20 years ago.

The cleaning & inspections of containers by authorities and stevedoring companies was very lax.

And I would bet a quid that yes, the Newman Govt. was responsible for wanting to charge for inspections of suspect infestations.

These agressive nasty biting/stinging bastrds will be allowed to run amok .... and join a long list of imported pests.

Look how Indian Mynah birds have just about taken over the whole state & are nearly as common/prolific as sparrows.

Don't hear much about the European wasp lately?

(That's "wasp" not "WASP")

Back in the olden days when Beattie was premier, the gumment decided to do something about fire ants.

They formed the Fire Ant Response Team.

Sadly, it didn't last; they changed the name...

WASPs have evolved into closet poms.

Was denizen Fireball a victim of fire ants? How much did they consume?
