THREE teenagers have been charged over a series of armed robberies in Melbourne’s north and a dramatic high-speed getaway that ended atop of the West Gate Bridge yesterday.
The trio were arrested after a pursuit that brought peak-hour traffic to a standstill.
Two 17-year-old boys have been charged with numerous offences including
armed robbery, burglary, theft of a motor vehicle and reckless conduct.They have been remanded and will appear in a children’s court.
An 18-year-old, from Hampton Park, was charged with the same offences and was remanded, to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
The youths have been described as of
African appearance.It was not known whether they were Apex gang members.
Yesterday dozens of police officers pursuing the three suspects swarmed around a green Holden Commodore on top of the West Gate Bridge, which they had chased across the north and west of the city.
The arrest comes amid an unprecedented wave of violent
carjackings and aggravated burglaries by youths across the state, and riots inside juvenile detention centres.
Police had been pursuing the suspects on the ground and from the air for about two hours.
The hunt began following an alleged armed robbery at a Lalor jewellery store on May Rd about 2pm yesterday.
It is believed the suspects tried to
hold up a tobacco shop on Plenty Rd, Preston, just a half-hour later. A pursuit began after the car was spotted in Dandenong.
The suspects allegedly took off down the Princes Freeway — going through the southeastern suburbs and to Werribee before performing a dangerous U-turn.
As the car reached the top of the West Gate Bridge, a plume of smoke appeared and the car fishtailed and came to a stop.
The trio were hauled from the car about 5.25pm.
One, in a white T-shirt was spreadeagled on the ground before being led off.
It was not known whether the trio were suspected of involvement in the notorious Apex gang.
Police will investigate any links to a robbery last month on the high-end IMP jewellery store, in which more than $200,000 worth of valuables were stolen, and a similar heist at a jewellery store in North Melbourne.
The manager of TSG Tobacco Station in Preston, Jin Mai, told the Herald Sun three teenagers of African appearance armed with crowbars had stormed in and demanded cash.
“I wasn’t scared — I just wanted to get them out,’’ he said. “They then demanded cigarettes and cash.”
Mr Mai, who refused to comply with the trio’s demands and phoned police, said he noticed a bright green Holden with another teen at the wheel.
Police would not confirm last night whether they were looking for a fourth suspect.
Youths involved in crime networks have been known to swap crew members to go out on “missions”.
There are suspicions of links between some gangs and organised crime.
Authorities have expressed concern at the danger youth gangs pose to the public.
Youths’ erratic behaviour while trying to evade police have also prompted fears that innocent lives will be lost. The state appears to be in the midst of a youth crime wave.
In July, Victoria’s police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton vowed his youth summit would be the start of tackling teen crime.
At the summit Premier Daniel Andrews said the government would follow through on key proposals and commended police for recognising there was an issue with more serious and violent youth offending.
