possible downtime and lost posts

I am planning on moving the site over to a dedicated server. Once the move starts, any new posts made might be lost.

I will keep you updated. It has not started yet.

New posts refers to posts made after he copies the database over. If this site is still up, any new posts made after the DB dump won't be moved and will be lost when he terminates this server. Keep an eye out for the signal and don't post until FD gives the heads up on the new site if it's something you want kept.

Perhaps an IP address while DNS sorts it's self out FD?

They are still setting up the new server for me. Might take 48 hours, just for that.

You are using mysql FD? If you had overlap of servers you could replicate the db so nothing was lost.

You'd also be half way there if another move ever happened to do another seamless change over.

I have just submitted the move request, so any posts made from now on may be lost. Apparently it usually takes between 24 and 72 hours. Not sure if it is automated and therefor underway already.

Interesting.

So you're shifting the site to Denver, Colorado where Marla hangs out with her flower-power hippie friends.

Hostgator just let me know they have started the process, which I assume means making the backup they will use to copy the site over, in which case new posts will almost certainly be lost.

It's the thought that counts, Grappler.

I was hoping they might be underpromising and overdelivering, but no. The backup finished at about 2pm today, but the new server is still not up and running.

You can check it by putting this IP address into your address bar:

162.144.110.142

If this takes you to the site home page rather than an error message, that means the new server is up and running. You should be able to start using the forum on the new server by following the instructions here:

https://support.rackspace.com/how-to/modify-your-hosts-file/

Until I update the DNS details, you will be able to use that to check which posts have been lost. Just comment the relevant line in and out and resave the file to switch between the old and new host.

You can access the old server using the instructions here:

https://support.rackspace.com/how-to/modify-your-hosts-file/

with this IP address:

198.57.138.216

The old server will go offline soon.
