Has World War 3 ALREADY Started? Russia and NATO exercises risk triggering global disaster

HUGE military drills on the border between Russia and NATO have sparked rumours a global conflict on a scale not seen since the 1940s may have already begun.

Fears have grown in the wake of several large-scale military exercises in the Baltic States and eastern Europe.

June's Anakonda 2016 was the largest war game in the region since the end of the Cold War.

The 10-day exercise saw more than 31,000 participants from 24 nations gather in Poland in a display of strength.

Speculation over a new cold war has heightened in recent days with the deployment of Russia's northern naval fleet to the Mediterranean.

The massing of troops for a military drill was used as a cover by the Kremlin in 2014 when they annexed Crimea.

Russia's military announced plans for more than 2,000 air, sea and land exercises over the summer.

The programme includes dozens of large-scale manoeuvres and anti-terror drills, at a time when Nato is also carrying out its own exercises in eastern Europe.

Russia's defence minister said the drills would be carried out from now until the end of October, with nine of them involving partnerships with foreign countries including Belarus and Mongolia.

Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu said the training period would be "intensive".

The largest exercise was carried out in September in south-west Russia, while Russia's involvement in the Syria conflict has given its armed forces valuable experience in real-life combat.

Nato officials have accused Russia of secretly gathering troops at Europe's border by pretending to carry out training drills.

In February 2014, Russia used the guise of a 'snap exercise' to mass 38,000 troops near the Ukrainian border.

A few days later, those same troops took part in the annexation of Crimea.

Russia has carried out at least a dozen of the so-called snap exercises, called at short or no notice, over the past two years.

In Asia, the US and the Philippines are conducting joint exercises and new military partnerships are forming between former enemies including Pakistan and Russia.

For the first time in modern history the two Cold War enemies will be conducting training exercises together.

The exercise also sends a message of defiance to America, which has also seen relations with Pakistan cool over recent years.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union was allied with Pakistan's arch-enemy India, while the US was a staunch supporter of Pakistan.

SAN FRANCISCO — Major websites were inaccessible to people across wide swaths of the United States on Friday after a company that manages crucial parts of the internet’s infrastructure said it was under attack.

Users reported sporadic problems reaching several websites, including Twitter, Netflix, Spotify, Airbnb, Reddit, Etsy, SoundCloud and The New York Times.

The company, Dyn, whose servers monitor and reroute internet traffic, said it began experiencing what security experts called a distributed denial-of-service attack just after 7 a.m. Reports that many sites were inaccessible started on the East Coast, but spread westward in three waves as the day wore on and into the evening.

And in a troubling development, the attack appears to have relied on hundreds of thousands of internet-connected devices like cameras, baby monitors and home routers that have been infected — without their owners’ knowledge — with software that allows hackers to command them to flood a target with overwhelming traffic.

A spokeswoman said the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security were looking into the incident and all potential causes, including criminal activity and a nation-state attack.

Kyle York, Dyn’s chief strategist, said his company and others that host the core parts of the internet’s infrastructure were targets for a growing number of more powerful attacks.

“The number and types of attacks, the duration of attacks and the complexity of these attacks are all on the rise,” Mr. York said.

Security researchers have long warned that the increasing number of devices being hooked up to the internet, the so-called Internet of Things, would present an enormous security issue. And the assault on Friday, security researchers say, is only a glimpse of how those devices can be used for online attacks.

Dyn, based in Manchester, N.H., said it had fended off the assault by 9:30 a.m. But by 11:52 a.m., Dyn said it was again under attack. After fending off the second wave of attacks, Dyn said at 5 p.m. that it was again facing a flood of traffic.

Argentines Protest UK’s Falklands War Games, Macri’s Foreign Policy

BUENOS AIRES – Leftist organizations protested Thursday outside Britain’s embassy in Buenos Aires against military exercises that that nation is carrying out in the disputed Falkland Islands.

They also slammed the Argentine government’s pursuit of closer ties with the United Kingdom.

The protesters said the war games amounted to “a NATO exercise on occupied territory, which is not only an affront to Argentine sovereignty but an act of aggression against all” of Latin America, Facundo Escobar, leader of Quebracho – an umbrella group of organizations that run the gamut from center-left to Marxist – told EFE.

Last Friday, Argentina’s government complained to the UN secretary general’s office about the exercises, which began Wednesday and are to last until Oct. 28, and also sent a protest note to Britain’s ambassador to the South American nation, Mark Kent.

Britain told EFE last Friday that the exercises, which include a test launch of short-range missiles designed to protect the islands’ air force station, were “routine” operations carried out approximately twice a year.

But the war games have rankled many in Argentina, which has long claimed sovereignty over that South Atlantic archipelago.

During Thursday’s protest in Buenos Aires’ Recoleta neighborhood, a group of around 100 people burned two British flags and harshly criticized Argentine President Mauricio Macri’s efforts to strengthen ties with Prime Minister Theresa May’s administration.

Since Macri took office in December 2015, the two countries have shown a desire to improve relations that had deteriorated under the center-left administrations of Nestor Kirchner, who governed from 2003 to 2007, and Cristina Fernandez, in office from 2007 to 2015.

Kirchner, Fernandez’s husband, died in 2010.

During a visit to Buenos Aires in September by British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Alan Duncan, the two countries pledged to strengthen bilateral ties and engage in dialogue to improve cooperation on matters of mutual interest in the Falklands.

The statement roiled sectors of the opposition and Macri’s ruling center-right Republican Proposal party because it did not press the sovereignty claims to the archipelago that Argentina has made since the first half of the 19th century.

Buenos Aires has long demanded that Britain comply with a 1965 United Nations resolution describing London’s control of the Falklands – which dates from 1833 – as colonialism and calling on the parties to resolve the dispute through dialogue.

London has refused to discuss the question of sovereignty and says the Falklanders should decide their own future.

The Falklands dispute erupted into armed conflict in 1982 when Argentine troops invaded the Falklands at the order of the military junta then in power in Buenos Aires.

Fighting officially began on May 1, 1982, with the arrival of a British task force, and ended 45 days later with the surrender of the Argentines.

The conflict claimed more than 900 lives – 649 Argentines and 255 British soldiers and sailors.

The dispute over the islands, which Argentines know as the Malvinas, has taken on new importance with the discovery of oil and gas deposits in the North Falkland Basin in recent years.

48% Of Russians Fear Syrian Conflict Will Lead To World War III

A recent Russian polls revealed something disturbing: according to almost half of the respondents, the deteriorating relations between Russia and the West caused by the ongoing crisis in Syria could develop into a global military conflict. As RT reports, the share of those who see the probability of World War III in the near future as high or very high is now at 48% and those who appraise it as low or very low comprise 42% of Russian society, according to the privately-owned public opinion research center Levada. The remaining 10% of respondents said they couldn’t give a simple answer to the question.

Another question revealed that Russians are skeptical there will be a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis, with a greater number seeing a non-violent outcome as more likely than not: when poll respondents were asked if they considered it possible that Russia and the West would eventually find a mutually acceptable solution to the crisis, 35% answered that this scenario was likely or very likely. Thirty-nine percent evaluate the probability of such an outcome as low or very low and 26 percent said that they couldn’t answer the question.

Perhaps indicative of Russia's clinical nationalism, just over half, or 52%, of Russians said they approve of their country’s involvement in the Syrian conflict while 26%  said they had a negative or sharply negative attitude to this. Just under a quarter – 23 percent – couldn’t answer the question about their personal view on the subject. Those who thought that Russia should continue the operation and those who thought that airstrikes should be stopped were divided 49 percent against 28 percent respectively, with 24 percent finding the question too difficult to answer.

A similar poll conducted a year ago by the Levada Center showed that over 70% of Russian citizens supported the air operations against IS terrorists in Syria, and almost a half of them agreed that it was right for Russia to support the government of Syria’s democratically-elected President Bashar Assad.


A different poll conducted earlier this month by the state-run research center VTSIOM showed that 73% of Russians believed that Western criticism of the air force’s counter-terrorism operation in Aleppo, Syria, was ungrounded and prejudiced. Only 6 percent said the allegations of wrongdoing on the part of the Russian military have some basis in reality.

The poll also found that the level of awareness about the situation in Syria and the Russian Air Force operation against ISIS terrorists there remained fairly high. Russia first deployed an air force contingent in Syria in 2015, after receiving a request for military help from the Syrian government, which is currently battling Islamic State and affiliated groups. Russian war planes began launching airstrikes on ISIS targets in Syria on September 30, 2015.

Eighteen percent said they were very closely following developments in Syria and 64 percent revealed partial familiarity with the issue. Just under a fifth – 17%– said that they were not interested in news about Syria.
