Efficient process to turn CO2 into ethanol

This could change everything.

Scientists Accidentally Discover Efficient Process to Turn CO2 Into Ethanol

Quote:
The process is cheap, efficient, and scalable, meaning it could soon be used to remove large amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere.

Scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee have discovered a chemical reaction to turn CO2 into ethanol, potentially creating a new technology to help avert climate change. Their findings were published in the journal ChemistrySelect.

The researchers were attempting to find a series of chemical reactions that could turn CO2 into a useful fuel, when they realized the first step in their process managed to do it all by itself. The reaction turns CO2 into ethanol, which could in turn be used to power generators and vehicles.

The tech involves a new combination of copper and carbon arranged into nanospikes on a silicon surface. The nanotechnology allows the reactions to be very precise, with very few contaminants.

"By using common materials, but arranging them with nanotechnology, we figured out how to limit the side reactions and end up with the one thing that we want," said Adam Rondinone.

This process has several advantages when compared to other methods of converting CO2 into fuel. The reaction uses common materials like copper and carbon, and it converts the CO2 into ethanol, which is already widely used as a fuel.

Perhaps most importantly, it works at room temperature, which means that it can be started and stopped easily and with little energy cost. This means that this conversion process could be used as temporary energy storage during a lull in renewable energy generation, smoothing out fluctuations in a renewable energy grid.

That's great. But I bet that it will cost a lot to produce that efficiently processed ethanol.

You would need more energy to make ethanol than you would get by burning it.
It still requires a lot of energy.

It would require a lot of energy, but there are also many sources of energy that produce copious amounts of energy.

Consider wind power and photovoltaic solar power. Sometimes such installations produces more energy than is needed. This process allows that surplus energy to be put to use making fuel instead of going to waste. Pairing intermittent sources of energy with intermittent industrial processes like this is a very good fit.

Just build 3 nuke reactors on the eastern seaboard and bring on the electric cars

Ok I need to read this, but it sounds like its solar powered.

I was skeptical as to where the energy was coming from also

Then it should called an energy storage system because that's what it is.

..high above the crowded suburbs of Canberra, national capital of Australia, a brand new Turnbulliner A2016 GST is on final approach into Canberra airport.... all seems normal in the cockpit and in the cabin, and last drinks are being handed around for those who need one or ten more to stop over even for a night in Canberra....... co-Captains Turnbull and Abbott.. the latter having been CEO of the failed Abbott Airlines that crashed on the market following the crash of the Budgetliner A2014, The Partyliner A2015, and the Abbotliner A2015... all within the space of  a few months..... not to mention the crash of Captain Abbott's private OneLiner, Hit Shappens .... Captain Abbott, however, has retained his Captain's certification and is flying today in the right seat alongside Chief Pilot Turnbull.....  both are highly experienced and well versed in evasive maneuvers ...... though questions have been raised in the past about Captain Abbott's ability to communicate clearly with ground controllers.....

Suddenly a huge updraft of hot air lifts the Turnbuliner GST 5000 feet in an eyeblink..... and the Captain is simultaneously advised of the near collapse of Turnbull Airlines, with passengers turning away in droves and cancelling thousands of tickets, and concerns over a shotgun-toting senator loose in Canberra..... and the Turnbulliner rolls over and enters a death dive..... Captain Abbott immediately begins a distress call ....

"Errr.. ahhhr..... ummmm.... sh1t happens.... ah... I blame Labor..... ummmm .... captain's call.. captain's call"....

Air Traffic Controllers have no idea what Captain Abbott is trying to convey....... and assume he is just drinking on the job ...... they return to their game of backgammon unaware that the Turnbulliner is falling from the sky........

What has happened?

Sorry lads - this was prompted by the suggestion of swamp gas etc.. leading to hot air as it burns off....

Sooner or later we are going to have a breakthrough.
