The WA Election Too Close To Call

WA election 'too close to call'

September 16 2016
(ABC News)

A marginal seats poll, commissioned by Unions WA, has recorded significant swings against the State Government, with the new seat of Bicton on a knife edge.   Smiley

In the past week, 2,700 people were questioned in six seats: Bicton, Mt Lawley, Morley, Southern River, Swan Hills and Wanneroo.

The average swing against the Government was 9 per cent — a result just shy of the uniform 10 per cent swing Labor needs to win the March election.

In two-party preferred terms, Labor was marginally ahead on 51 per cent, compared to the Liberals on 49 per cent.

Unions WA state secretary Meredith Hammat said she commissioned the polling to gain a better understanding of peoples' concerns in order to fine tune the trade union movement's campaign.

"What we've found is that the next state election is really too close to call," she said.

"We know this election will come down to every vote in every marginal seat."

Health is voters' primary concern

610 respondents were surveyed in person and were asked their biggest issue of concern.

Health and hospitals topped the list (15.4 per cent), followed by public transport (14.3 per cent), jobs (10.8 per cent), the budget (8.5 per cent), community safety (8.1 per cent) and education (7.7 per cent).

Other issues of concern were the environment, cost of living, drug and alcohol abuse and traffic congestion.

"I think people are at a point now where they feel strongly about these issues, they want to see some change," Ms Hammat said.

"They want life to get easier and better for them and I don't think people have confidence that they'll get that from a Liberal government."   Sad

In the new seat of Bicton, which the Liberals notionally hold by a margin of 10 per cent, the two-party preferred result was 50-50.

The Liberal candidate for Bicton is sitting MP Matt Taylor, who was embroiled in a bitter preselection contest against Dean Nalder earlier this year.

A redistribution left the pair fighting over the much safer seat of Bateman (23.1 per cent Lib), with Mr Nalder emerging victorious.

Mr Taylor was later preselected for Bicton, where the controversial Freight Link project emerged as a key issue.

Mr Taylor was contacted for comment.

Indeed, they have.

My mate won his seat, so maybe a new job for me.

My local member is now the Treasurer - excellent.

And Mark is Premier.

What an excellent night.

No.

If I take the job he's offering, I'll lose about 10K a year.

Not that money motivates me.

We'll see what next week brings.

Okay, I predicted a victory speech at 9pm.

I got that wrong.

Looks like I was about 11 minutes out.
