The pervasive mentality of criminal opportunism is why Canberra has never opened the gate to South American immigration beyond a token few.

Anyone else think these Games are going to end up in a world of pain?

Lots of pointers out there. Just hope there are no terrorist attacks that would finish it.

And you don't think that isn't a factor in the mentality of a large portion of the so called refugee intake from Africa & the ME in the last 10-15 years?

Me too.  I have little interest this year in the Games that I used to love to watch.  I have an uneasy feeling about the whole thing.

A huge part of Rio's annual income is from the tourist trade, and so I pity any terrorist who survives an attack on the crowds now attending this event.

Yuk!!

Dolphins assistant coach Michael Bohl felt he had to pull Australian swimmers - including dual world champion Mitch Larkin - from the pool on Thursday because the quality of the water concerned him.

They instead trained in the adjoining - and much more crowded - main competition pool.

"That pool looked really cloudy," Bohl said.

"Rather than risk eye, ear or any other infection we brought them in here.

Why can't the Rio city council put together a task force of people to clean up the area, in  the last 5 years? Is Brazil really that poor that they can't put together something of proper standards?

its an extremely poor country overall... and labor is super cheap..

in some of the cities I've seen a team of guys pathing entire streets.. but that's just putting some sand and bricks down..

building something complicated on the other hand is a different story... they just don't seem to have the "knowhow"

they tried to put up a monorail in Porto Alegrea once.. got half way through and then gave up.... so half the infrastructure is still there for graffiti artists to paint on..

It does not matter how poor a country is in the world. They can still fix stuff up and make things presentable for the competitors. If Australia had the problems of Rio, we would have cleaned the waterway, the beaches, made the infrastructure habitable for all concerned. Because at the end of the day, this will determine how the world views Brazil in one of their main cities.

I can understand that drug dealers rule the streets and have no problem killing people (locals and tourists) without hesitation. That would be a big hindrance in cleaning up the facilities. It is sort of the reason why I don't mind the police over there killing off the drug dealers.

I have to wonder at the mentality of the Australian opening ceremony uniform creators. Are they just a bunch of marijuana smoking couturiers who have no concept of what athletes want? These uniform designs might have turned heads 40 years ago. But, today, Australian athletes are made to look like a bunch of dorks.
