The Northern Territory election is on August 27th. It's time we had a discussion thread on it.

Current state of play:

CLP 11 (16 at 2012 election)
Labor 7 (8 at 2012 election)
Independent 7 (1 at 2012 election). The independents include 5 former CLP members and one former Labor member.

Total 25. 13 members are required for a majority. The CLP won a majority in 2012 but have since been reduced to minority government after five members resigned from the party.

My gut feeling is,, Labor will win.

CLP have been in for a while (you make enemies)
The Feds are Lib,,, people like to protest at a state level.
Lots of Drongo scandals from CLP members.
Downturn in resources.

Labor are pretty much a bunch of Drongoes up here but that has never stopped them from getting elected before.

There's an opinion poll out, and if it's accurate the CLP are going to get annihilated.

From GhostWhoVotes (twitter):

Quote:
#MediaReach Poll NT Territory Primary Votes: CLP 26 (-24.6 from election) ALP 36 (-0.5) GRN 6 (+2.7) 1Territory 6 (+6) #ntpol #auspol

This poll presumably has a significant undecided number.

Quote:
#MediaReach Poll NT Preferred Chief Minister: Giles CLP 29 Gunner ALP 46 #ntpol #auspol

Quote:
#MediaReach Poll NT Territory 2 Party Preferred: CLP 36 (-20 from election) ALP 64 (+20) #ntpol #auspol

54-46 is considered a landslide. 64-36 would be an apocalypse. The 64-36 numbers are similar to the NSW state election of 2011. On a uniform 20% swing, the CLP would be left with about three seats.

Pretty much sums in up Mike.  I lived in Darwin for a few years and the Government's up there nearly rivalled PNG for unstableness!     One guy I quite liked though was John Elferink.  He used to park his van each afternoon and get a deck chair and radio out and just talk to people.    I passed him every day as I walked from Larrakeyah Barracks to Cullen Bay.  Really nice bloke!

Yeah, that looks about right. The CLP look like they are about to be decimated.

The CLP ended up with two seats. Two. They are outnumbered by five independents.
