I have a window open at the front of the house, and one in the spare bedroom down the hallway. I drove home from work tonight with the window in my car down. It was a nice breeze. What winter are people talking about?

Worked a relatively late shift tonight. Got home in the cold, hungry and tired. Ate chicken soup, whilst my main meal was being cooked. Almost fell asleep watching a movie. Good thing that I was aware of my surroundings, or I would have burnt the vegetables. Turned the oven on and left the door open to warm the house. But only the lounge, kitchen, and my bedroom will benefit from the warmth.

Have to admit, it got really cold within the space of a day.

It is minus 5 in Canberra this morning.  I have been leaving the heating on 24/7 for weeks ... even when I go out .... the house is nice and cosy but I expect a large electricity bill.  Cheesy

Electricity is too expensive to heat a house.
Can you get gas in Canberra?

My usual Winter electricity bill (my house is ALL electric, including hot water, stove, etc) is around $500 for the 3 months.  Last year I left the heating on 24/7 for most of that 3 months and the bill only went up by about $80 ... I will see what happens when I leave it on for the entire Winter months.

There is Natural Gas in the street, put in by AGL 25 years ago.  I just do NOT like gas.  Neighbours I know with gas heating costs more than my electricity does.  Roll Eyes

I'm thinking of doing that myself now - leaving the air/con running 24/7.

My 2.75HP LG a/c is a pathetic piece of crap when it's 5°C outside or lower. It simply doesn't produce enough heat to warm the place properly.

Last year I was so pissed off with it that I called in a technician to check the thing for faults. He found nothing wrong with it, and that information cost me $230 for the home visit.

He did give me one tip though: He said that of all the split-system a/con brands the only one that works properly to deliver high heat first thing on cold mornings is the Daikin brand. All the rest are okay, but only after the morning warms up.

Daikin 'reads' the cold and delivers the heat needed to compensate for it.

My LG is otherwise very good at cooling the house on blistering hot days, but as a heater in the early morning cold - it's a fraudulent piece of garbage.

I have a gas outlet coming up through the floor of my lounge room. It might be an idea to supplement my crappy LG a/con with some gas heating first thing in the mornings.

Have you seen the ceiling gas heaters at Bunnings hardware stores? Maybe one of those in my lounge-room ... ?  Tongue

Yes - reverse cycle air cons take hours to heat up a room when it's cold.

The air issuing from the wall unit is on average 45°C - which simply isn't nearly good enough. First chance I get to trade in my LG for a Daikin - I'll be going for it.

I couldn't give a rat's arse about electricity bills when it comes to comfort.

I have a Daikin split system, I live in a single level townhouse.  I used to turn the heating on when I got up and off at night but it seemed to take forever to warm up in the morning so I decided to leave it running 24/7 ... the extra cost is minimal.  My Summer electricity bill is around $280 for the quarter .... the heating isn't that expensive. Just checked, last year Winter bill was $583.00 (paid in August) and the one (for 3 months) before that was $245.00.  I also use a Samsung washer/dryer combo every few days and everything else is electric including hot water, cooking, etc. I think it is cheaper to leave the heating on 24/7 than to turn it off and on every morning. Obviously, it takes up some energy to start-up .... and then works full bore to get to the required temperature.  I also have it set at 28C (obviously it does NOT get that hot) that's what the Techie person told me.

PS.  I was joking about the shorts and t-shirt.  Grin

Starkers are you ~ with tassles that rotate when you jiggle?

But moving right along .... I have gas cooking because I use a big wog for my stir-fries.

I made some poor investments in helping out a family member to the tune of around $250,000 in today's currency, and who at the very end left me with not a brass razoo from his Will, with his investment home going wholly to his bitch of a third wife - and so I haven't been able to afford to move out from this fibro shack that was built in 1956.

Not that I'm ungrateful to have owned my own home these past 25 years, of course.

The insulation is crap, and that's why the heat escapes so readily.

I'll be exploring the idea of buying one of those gas-heater units that sits on the floor.

Grin

Hi Herby,
get gas ducted heating - it's the best.

Yes I also have gas ducted 13 outlets warm as toast!

Not cheap though but better than freezing your tits off,

If I have to live in a cold city stuffed if I am going to freeze!

And at the end of the day no different to the Qlders running air con all day in summer! When I dont need any!

How would I know offhand what "size" my Daikin is? Grin  Actually, I had to search for the original quote from Delta Air Conditioning .... dated 25/9/06 (10 years ago). Installed on 6/10/06.  It says:

5.2 kW cool/6.5 kW heat (6.71 HP and 8.71 HP ... I used an online converter)

It cost me $2,552 (incl GST). I get it serviced each year around Spring.

Actually, when the guy who gave me the original quote came, he had an electronic meter thing that measured the size/area that I wanted cooled/heated to arrive at the kW I needed. 2.75 HP (2.05 kW) would barely melt chocolate.  Tongue

Interesting.

I'll have to check my stats again. 8.71 HP? Jesus! I didn't know they made such a powerful unit for the domestic market.

Forget the check-up once a year. All the fellow does is clean the filters, a 2 minute job at most.

I'm impressed you got a Daikin though. I'm green with envy.

I would have thought the annual checkup should include a cooling output test running on max cooling ( done with a meter device) and a gas top up if required!

It does ... the tech guy is usually here for an hour.    The 5 year Warranty included an annual service (at my cost), but I have continued with it ... last year it cost me $180! A bit steep, but at least I know the motor is running OK.

I get the impression you're not young, so why don't you sell your place and whoop it up for your remaining years?
Even an unimproved fibro shack in Sydney must be $600k land val?

Nothing like that amount. Try half.

I'm facing extinction within two or three years now - (I'm currently an unbelievable 9 years overdue according to the family's death stats). I'd rather die owning my own little shack than die renting a palace.

You could sell up and go on a permanent luxury Around the World Cruise.  All accommodation  food and entertainment paid for and lots of company (including rich Widows). Cheaper than a Nursing Home too, apparently. Plus you will get buried at sea if you cark it.  Cheesy

PS.  You could take along your laptop and post on here, as you normally do.  Grin

None. My niece visits places all over the world every year on her holidays, but I've never yet seen her come back home flushed with excitement.

The local shopping centre is far enough for me.

Since I dont think you dont have any family to leave it to herb, take out a moderate reverse mortgage and use this to improve your lifestyle for the next  ten years or so.

My understanding is you dont repay the mortgage back by regular payments, but the bank gets their cut out of your estate or when you sell up to move into a home.

From
https://www.moneysmart.gov.au/superannuation-and-retirement/income-sources-in-re...

How reverse mortgages work

A reverse mortgage allows you to borrow money using the equity in your home as security. The loan can be taken as a lump sum, a regular income stream, a line of credit or a combination of these options.

While no income is required to qualify, credit providers are required by law to lend you money responsibly so not everyone will be able to obtain this type of loan.

Interest is charged like any other loan, except you don't have to make repayments while you live in your home - the interest compounds over time and is added to your loan balance. You remain the owner of your house and can stay in it for as long as you want.

You must repay the loan in full (including interest and fees) when you sell your home or die or, in most cases, if you move into aged care.

The risks

Interest rates are generally higher than average home loans
The debt can rise quickly as the interest compounds over the term of the loan - this is the effect of compound interest and is something you need to be aware of before making any decisions
The loan may affect your pension eligibility
You may not have enough money left for aged care or other future needs
If you are the sole owner of the property and someone lives with you, that person may not be able to stay when you die (in some circumstances)
If you fix your interest rate then the costs to break your agreement can be very high

Thank you for your kind advice, Redneck, but the property goes 100% to my niece, with no sticky-fingers intercepting the Title Deeds as it gets processed by my solicitor.

I can relate to that, I am also planning something similar!

I grew at the beginning of the 'me generation' so I'd hedge my bets and go out in a blaze of glory but leave enough to give my daughter a huge leg up.

I had visions of a sweet niece paying regular visits to her elderly uncle, making him cups of tea and teaching him how to connect the wifi.
Screw her, reverse mortgage the lot and spent it on blow and hookers in Vegas.

Looks good, Aussie. You've definitely got some bargains up there for retirees who don't need to trek to and from work every day.

I've been trying to get my dad to do a reverse mortgage. His health isn't good and I'd give him less than ten years: May as well enjoy it.

But the silly old coot is like Herbert and won't have a bar of it.

Anyone who signs up for a reverse mortgage is a Banker's wety dream.  Never, ever do it.  Sell, downsize into better digs is the way to go.

Ooooooo!!!! A contest for Herbert!  But, the ultimate question is ~ is he worthy???

(What's that 'flood' bullshit for the Sunshine Coast?? Local/street at worst, just like down at the Crime Capital of Qld where Little Old Farts like Herbert cannot even go to a Restaurant without WW3 erupting around him.)

Many moons ago I was all set up by my ethnic workmates to marry a Fiji Indian girl from New Zealand. Damned if I can remember what I was to be paid. We never met, but she was matched up with someone else.

And then they tried to marry me off to a Dutch woman.

actually, a true story. A few weeks after I moved up I was going through the local free neighborhood paper trying to learn about the area and was gobsmacked to find an add from a girl claiming to be a pretty 18yrs old looking for an elderly gent off 60 - 70yrs of age who was willing to spoil her in exchange for a good time.

I knew it happened but to be advertising for it in a local rag?

As for the girl - I'm no Geoffrey Edelsten with enough money to pay for young bed-warmers year in year out.

I'm starting to come around Brave Sir Rob, I need to close the window. It's 2.6. I'm starting to shiver.

My new house has ducted gas heating so I'm prepared.

It is minus 5 in Canberra this morning.  I have been leaving the heating on 24/7 for weeks ... even when I go out .... the house is nice and cosy but I expect a large electricity bill.  Cheesy

I paid a $500 quarterly bill for running hot water in my bath to flush out some chemical that some arsehole put into the hot water system. Seemed that I overpayed by $200, and only had to pay $70 for the quarter, just yesterday. But I imagine that the hot water system would be quite expensive to heat for one person like me.

So, I can imagine leaving the heater on for 24/7 for weeks to be an amazing expense to you. Could not you just stick to jumper and beany, for the weeks that are really cold for you? Admittedly, I had the oven going at near 100 degrees, and the door to the oven left open, just to keep a house cozy.

Or you could just put the heater on when you are home. Then, turning the heater off when the house is warm enough. I guess I would not be the type of person to tell you what to do, since my house is designed to be cool not hot.

I've just watched 'Wolf Creek 2'. Bonza movie but I did understand why he let the Pommy **** go in the end.

Wolf Creek is set in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. I would assume that they stick fairly close to filming near the crater and surrounds.

Taylor let the Pommy go because he tends to let someone live to take the fall for the deaths of their fellow travellers. The authorities have a difficult time believing the survivor's story, and generally hold them as a suspect.

Probably better to watch the recent tv series of Wolf Creek. It sticks close to the movies, and shows more depth to the character of Mick Taylor.

And then they tried to marry me off to a Dutch woman. Tongue

Dutch girls can be pretty damn hot. What kind of Dutch woman were you going to get? An Indonesian migrant? Might actually be pretty good, though.

Blonde and blue-eyed from all accounts.

But as someone who was working a rotating shift of morning, afternoon, and night - the last thing I had on my mind was to increase my load. Sleep took priority over everything.

Many moons ago I was all set up by my ethnic workmates to marry a Fiji Indian girl from New Zealand. Damned if I can remember what I was to be paid. We never met, but she was matched up with someone else.

And then they tried to marry me off to a Dutch woman. Tongue

Dutch girls can be pretty damn hot. What kind of Dutch woman were you going to get? An Indonesian migrant? Might actually be pretty good, though.

I've had 2 Dutch girlfriends and a bunch of Dutch f-friends when I was backpacking. Most memorable was at a bar in koh phi phi when the little dutch hottie I'd been tuning up all night stood up and said 'and now we go back to my bungalow to bugger.'

Though it was a bit frosty today.  Ran 5km at the beach in the drizzle  and my face was numb.

Sydney's maximum temperature for Monday will have reached just 11.7 degrees. That reading would also make it the coolest day for any month in 20 years, said Brett Dutschke, senior meteorologist

Dear Aussie.  In the thread about the man who raped a 13 year old girl Sista Karnal was making jocular  comments abouts the best way to lure a child into a car. I was simply throwing it back at her.....yuk

Blonde and blue-eyed from all accounts.

But as someone who was working a rotating shift of morning, afternoon, and night - the last thing I had on my mind was to increase my load. Sleep took priority over everything.  Tongue

I got curious after writing my comment about what sort of Dutch women were being advertised as wives. So, I looked it up. Definite Indonesian heritage.

I should google Australian wives, and see if things are the same for here.

Exactly. Some Old Farts have absolutely No Sense of Humour, at all.  They pretend to be very moral ...

Quote:
Moral
concerned with the principles of right and wrong behaviour.
"the moral dimensions of medical intervention"
synonyms:      virtuous, good, righteous, upright, upstanding, high-minded, right-minded, principled, proper, honourable, honest, just, noble, incorruptible, scrupulous, respectable, decent, irreproachable, truthful, law-abiding, clean-living, chaste, pure, blameless, sinless

Yet they unashamably troll the female members, consistently. It's bullying ... Freediver should look into this.

Animal skins, the warmth of domesticated dingos and the use of fire, Herbie.

Despite the claims by settlers and others, today it's now fairly well understood that not all Indigenous Australians were fully nomadic in the SE corner of the continent and that they wore clothing in the colder months.

Today, there are animal skin cloaks which were sewn by Indigenous women which are considered by many modern seamstresses to be the equal or better of the comparable colonial clothing of the time,  Herbie.

I'll bet they were bloody freezing for most of the day, if not 24/7.

If you ever get lost in the bush, Brian, when it's time to sleep, always raise yourself so your body is not touching the ground. The ground sucks the heat from your body like a vacuum cleaner. Your body-heat literally drains into the ground.

I'm staggered that after 36,000 years the abos hadn't invented woven cloth.

You need a fleece bearing animal for that, Herbie.   Australia had none until the advent of European colonisation.

You're an intelligent man when you want to be, Herbie, why are you always down on other people so much?   Indigenous people managed to survive in Australia for 40,000+ years without too much trouble.   Why not just accept that, instead of criticising them continually for not being more European in their approach to matters?

Without fleece bearing animals, their ability to weave cloth was never going to develop.

Without more intelligent animals than Kangaroos, Wombats and Emus, their ability to domesticate and herd animals wasn't going to develop.

They were limited to what was available.

I thought many of the WA desert tribes at least married older men to the girls. Being older and surviving I am guessing meant better DNA. I'm guessing, in their native habitat, they lived as long as any other H/G society.

What have European lifespans been over time? Middle ages? All that tech? Cathedrals? Life expectancy of what?

Don't get me started on the dark ages.

Indeed what was the life expectancy of the colonialists? The convicts?

The same way they always have. They rip up anything made of wood, throw it on a pile, and get someone to rub sticks together to get a fire going. Then they sit around for the night by the fire, doing sweet f.a. until the morning to, literally, get some grub for breakfast.

I doubt that. It would be more like comparing David Jones apparel to Lifeline store's clothing. But, anything to keep out the cold, I guess.

Rabid nonsense.

There were plenty of vegetable fibres they could have beaten into thread to weave warm clothing from.

we have been here 200 years and have a life expectancy of 88 or so.
abbos were her 20,000 years or so they claim, have a current life expectancy of 50 ish.
It has improved greatly since we helped them out of caves.
Without our help, they would still be 30 ish.

The aboriginals generally avoided caves. Too dark.

When you take deaths at birth out of the equation the figures jump a fair bit.

Aboriginals were at the bottom rung of human development on this planet and saying they made a nice coat here or there, painted a few sticks won't change that. I'm sure the reasons are a complex mix of flora, fauna and isolation but the facts don't change.

It was The Cult of the Elders' Elitism and Special Status that forbade any individualism to emerge amongst the lower orders, and therefore their brightest brains were subordinated to the authority of Their Betters who were not to be challenged.

Galileo nearly lost his life because he broke rank with The Elite and defied 'conventional wisdom' when he had the effrontery and the gall to assume to know better than the Establishment.

The Aztecs made toy wheels for their children but never made these as full size to cart loads around with.

They rarely lived in caves, Sprint.    Roll Eyes

The reason why the Indigenous average lifespan is relatively low (approximately 65 IIRC) today is because of the accumulative effects of poor diet, alcohol and inactivity which colonisation introduced them to.   Several years ago there was an exhibition of Larakea Men's photos take in the first quarter of the 20th Century, in Darwin.   All the men, who were hunter-gatherers, were fine, upstanding figures, well muscled and lean and hard.   No alcohol, a healthy diet and existence.    Photos taken today, would tell a very different story.

True.  If you survived the first five years of life, you tended to live to an appreciable age in all societies without modern medicine.

Ah, but the interpretation of those facts can put a different face on how Indigenous life was lived and perceived.

When I was a youngster, the Indigenous Australians were portrayed as primitive, nomadic hunter-gatherers who roamed the land all year round.    Once the records were re-examined and looked at objectively, they are now portrayed as sophisticated, semi-nomadic, with established towns in some areas and they had native meadows where they harvested native grains and fruits, used sophisticated fire-stick hunting techniques peoples.   This is all now known from the colonists' own records.   It was at the time and afterwards, simply too embarrassing and so a negative picture was created and maintained in the minds of many white Colonist Australians.   Roll Eyes

Dear O dear O dear .... You've been taking an awful hammering these past few days, Brian. We've been telling you to stay down on the canvas, but no, you insist on a trip to the Casualty Ward rather than admit that, yes, once again you've done a pratfall.

Don't see many clothing textiles in that list, Herbie.   Nor the processes by which they can be turned into clothing.   Sorry, you've failed again.   Keep trying, it's fun watching you.    Roll Eyes

Yes I agree they were much more sophisticated than the original narrative, but in recent years they're being described by some as the pinnacle of human social development.
I'm all for their achievements to be described in as positive a light as possible to help their self esteem.

I felt it was easier to make that point rather than blame a father who we know has exaggerated about his daughter in the past, Gordy.   Roll Eyes

I am not denying that some people over-egg the pudding as far as Indigenous Australians go.  However, there are other people who resort to bigotry in order to justify the invasion and dispossession of Indigenous Australians from their land.   I was hoping you weren't one...    Roll Eyes

If you want to discuss this seriously, which I have attempted to do, without silly pictures of Roman aqueducts and so on, then lets do so.   However, if you wish to be a silly bugger and post pictures of Roman aqueducts...   Well, what can I do about it?

Where?  By whom?

None of my kids were taught that at school when they attended.

I learnt otherwise when I went to Uni and what has been published since.

Seems to me that it's just toxic bigotry, Gordy.    Roll Eyes

Always with the name calling.
The intellectually lazy way to argue.

What's wrong with using the correct word to describe what it is, Gordy?    Roll Eyes

Quote:
So my daughter had an excursion to a national park and came back with something from the indigenous education bit with about how the locals had world class water management.  Cheesy

Really?   Perhaps she needed to listen a little bit better?    Roll Eyes

So now your having a go at a child?
It was a handout with bullet points.

I believe Indigenous Australian had just about the lowest social and technological evolution on the planet.

Calling the arrival of Europeans what you want but ONLY using the word 'invasion' (which many people want) is divisive. It was an invasion, a colonization, immigration.
It was many different things to many different people.

Lets face it tho, it was inevitable. It could have gone better for them if they were discovered by Captain Kirk and he stuck to the prime directive of not interfering with primitive species, but in that era, can you see any other course in history?

I agree that Aboriginals certainly got the shitt end of the stick and now it's us to up to help make it good,  but lets drop the noble savage BS.

So, you're basically saying that you're a racist then, I take it, Gordy?   Afterall, that is the justification of so much of the racism that racists use.

In reality, Indigenous Australians are as evolutionary as advanced as are all humans.  Socially they are as advanced and technologically, before the arrival of the colonists, their solutions to the technical problems that faced them were as sophisticated as were any other group of humanity.

If the present peaceful immigration of various groups to Australia can be termed an "invasion" by some, then how would you characterise the use of military and force which accompanied the arrival of British colonists in 1788?   I believe it was an invasion, Gordy.   I have read colonial records of the frontier war, have you?

Yes.  I can see the Indigenous peoples' claims on the land to be respected and accepted, just as were those of the Maoris in New Zealand next door, by the same colonial power,  at approximately the same time, as they were in India, Africa and the Americas...    Roll Eyes

It is to a certain degree bullshit, I agree but not many modern anthropologists believe it, Gordy.   It's primarily the dillentes who believe that what ever the colonists claimed was bullshit.   I don't.  I actually believe what the first colonists said, rather than what the later, land stealing ones claimed to justify their destruction of Indigenous culture and society.   What about you?   You state one thing and then immediately claim the reverse...   Roll Eyes

I've been to Angkor Watt, Pyramids of Giza, Temples of Began, Stone Henge, colosseum.

These are my points of comparison

Show me the structures
Show me the governance
Show me the major works of art
Show me the ancient texts
Show me the agriculture
Show me the science
Show me engineering

The reason they are failing so miserably now is because they had progressed so little.

In essence, none of that should matter, if it does perhaps China should take us over.( Wink). Were they a viable society? Yes... Until the inevitable.

I also have another way of looking at it.  What if somehow Australia had been left alone, totally isolated.
Likely they'd still be using stones and sticks while the rest of the world existed then ceased to exist, so default their way was best.  It still doesn't elevate their lack of progress to something it is not  Smiley

Every society reaches an equilibrium with it's environment and it's needs, Gordy.   China plateaued at around 1650.  Australia, about 20,000 years ago.  Europe?  Well, if the Church had had it's way, it would have stopped developing about 1200 CE...    Roll Eyes

I don't believe I did either. How do we judge both methods of society until they run their course? We know where HG fails, because of our way, do we know where our way fails? When we do it may be our way is not the best.

Nothing to see.  Just a closed mind it seems.   Roll Eyes

Tell me, do you think that the North American natives were "primitive" and "stone age peoples"?   Afterall, they left nothing behind them.   What about the biggest empire the world has seen, the Mongols, stretching from Eastern Europe to the Sea of Japan?  How much did they leave behind?   What about the Aztec and Incan Empires?   Not much left of their works, either...

It all depends on what you're looking for Gordy.  If you want Coliseums and Pyramids, you'll be disappointed but if you're willing to see fish traps and stone art, well, there is plenty of that.

So, you're basically saying that you're a racist

Just can't help yourself with the name calling.

Just can't accept the correct use of a word to identify what I am talking/asking about, can you, Gordy?

You make a racist statement, what should I call it?   Something nice and comfy for your feelings?    Roll Eyes

I've been to Angkor Watt, Pyramids of Giza, Temples of Began, Stone Henge, colosseum.

These are my points of comparison

Show me the structures
Show me the governance
Show me the major works of art
Show me the ancient texts
Show me the agriculture
Show me the science
Show me engineering

The reason they are failing so miserably now is because they had progressed so little.

Show me the structures
Show me the governance
Show me the major works of art

All you need is to open your eyes, Gordy...    Roll Eyes

There's nothing to see. Just rocks and sticks

Impressive list there,  Brian.

All humans worked out how to catch or trap fish. That's a given. Fish traps are the kinds of things you check out for 30 seconds and say yeah cool on your way to the wonderment of places like Angkor Watt.

All the examples you gave had complex governments, dabbled with alloys and most built impressive structures.

Every society reaches an equilibrium with it's environment and it's needs, Gordy.   China plateaued at around 1650.  Australia, about 20,000 years ago.  Europe?  Well, if the Church had had it's way, it would have stopped developing about 1200 CE...    Roll Eyes

You asked for those things, I delivered.  You were disappointed.  What a shame you refused to open your mind, Gordy, you decided they weren't even worth looking at.

What happened to Angkor Watt, Gordy?   It was neglected after the 16th century apparently, while the Jungle reclaimed it.

It is no doubt an impressive site.  However, it is of what was, just as the links I provided were, Gordy.

All the examples left what behind, exactly?   The Mongols, virtually nothing, except a few stone statues and a lot of legends.  The American Natives?   Apart from some pyramids, in central America (and they BTW were Maya mainly, rather than Aztec), not much.  The Incans disappeared under the weight of Spanish rule.   The Northern native tribes still live but are shadows of their former selves.   It is all fleeting, Gordy, all fleeting.    Roll Eyes

Southeast QLD's frosty Sunday
Tristan Meyers, Sunday July 3, 2016 - 15:25 EST

It was chilly throughout southeast Queensland this morning, with areas of frost.

The mercury dropped to near freezing this morning at Amberley and three degrees at Archerfield, making it the coldest it's been since last winter. Further west and on the ranges, Texas dropped to -1 degree and Dalby fell to -2.5 degrees, the frostiest morning since at August last year.

A large high pressure ridge has been bringing light winds to southeast QLD. Last night, the dry and cold air cooled to these icy levels, bringing frost to the highlands and parts of western Brisbane.

Generally, western parts of Brisbane see about two frost days every July, whilst the Darling Downs and Granite Belt area can see as much as 15 frost days in July. Nevertheless, these temperatures are about four-to-seven degrees below the July average.

Tomorrow, a trough will deepen as it draws in moisture in the southeast This will help prevent temperatures from dropping sub-zero in these areas for the next week.

It's cold again. Though not cold like last week. Just "below 10 degrees at night" cold. Got the heaters and oven going to keep warm. Should really consider wearing a jacket.

Started to get warm again, over the last few days. Then it got cold again tonight. We have these showers/rain coming in tomorrow, and then Friday. Supposedly going to get really heavy for a bit. Up to 200mm expected over 2 days. Bureau said that temperatures would plummet after that, to give us a real cold winter. I was suspicious at first, thinking that we are over our winter already. But, seems that the bureau could be correct.

Normally, during the winter in Rockhampton, a wet weather spell usually has a a dry change with some cold weather after it. The more wet, the colder it usually gets in the aftermath. Since we are about to reach August, it is unlikely to be much colder than it has been. Plus, we might get another lot of wet weather coming along in the next week, seeing as the west is expecting more rain later next week. Winter is usually over for us, come August.

Up to 200mm expected over 2 days. Bureau said that temperatures would plummet after that, to give us a real cold winter. I was suspicious at first, thinking that we are over our winter already. But, seems that the bureau could be correct.

Everywhere south of Rocky is as cold and bitter as a witch's tit, below 23 degrees is the start of sh1t weather.  Smiley

It will be 22 degrees tomorrow at Bronte beach:

http://www.weatherzone.com.au/nsw/sydney/bronte

a lot better than cold Melbourne.

I slept so well today, that I did not want to get out of bed. Had to get up, as I had to go to work. Last night, we broke our July record of 184mm of rain for the month by about 54mm. And we still have 14 days left for potential rain.

If we do not see an end to the drought throughout Qld after this, then I shall be completely surprised.

Temps around the 12 degree mark for the night. Daytime temperatures are below average, but still pleasant. I think we are done for the winter this year.

It's actually cold again. Was expecting a warm change for the next few weeks. Then, it got cold a few nights. May still get some use out of my fake leather jacket for another night.

When I first moved to Canberra and used to drive up to Sydney periodically, I remember driving up one Winter when it was about 10C here and, I swear, that Sydney at 17C was MUCH colder .... the cold would go right into your bones.  Brrrr.

Saw -1 degrees in Alice Springs today. So, I guess there is a possibility of one more gasp of cold weather coming our way on the east coast before we start to see spring. The bureau is not saying that it's getting all that cold this week. But we might see one more gust of cold wind blowing north.

I was shivering at 10C at night, here. But, 17C night temperatures had me opening the windows again. Got down to 8C the other night, and all I did to keep warm was to close the loungeroom door. Too lazy to close the windows.

Cold on Friday night. Even colder on Saturday night. It got done to 5 degrees here last night. Even a beany and a jacket was not good enough to keep me warm, as I went for a late night walk. Walked about 100 metres and thought "Nope". Turned around and went home. Tonight does not seem all that warmer. Though, tonight is more tolerable.

90+F in Rockhampton is a typical summer's day. Start seeing those days by October.

That's springtime in the southern hemi. Temps start to mellow out of the 90F's by now as the northern slowly descend into autumn but you know, it all comes down to Bobby's car windows as to the fate of weather systems on a global scale.   Undecided

I used to work out of Longreach for many years,  in the zeros or lows for the night, in the scorchers during the day.   Not bad down here in Melb though - has been a relatively good winter.

A customer of mine told me about how he worked out east of Alice Springs. He told me that in that year, the temperature got down to -10 degrees celsius.

I think I have only experienced one negative degree day in my life. Never seen a zero degree day since before 2010.

Still cold in Canberra, down to about 4° overnight and about 15° during the day. I still have the heating on 24/7.  Spring is when the wind blows from the direction of the "Australian Alps" (snowfields) and can be quite cold due to the snow melting.  I doubt we will get a hot day until at least December. I've actually had the heating on for Christmas. This is why the pollies don't live in Canberra, they come when Parliament is Sitting and leave straight afterwards. Which is a great thing for us Canberrans.  Grin

I alternated between 2 sites, 1 was about 30Km out of Longreach, the other around 180K at a place called Stonehenge.   Now that got cold!

At 4 degrees, I would turn the oven on to about 80 degrees and leave the door open. The kitchen would be the only part of the house warm. But at least it did some good throughout the house. I also had citronella tea lights that I would light up in my loungeroom. They were effective in keeping the room warm.

Seems like Rockhampton had a late start to Winter. A mild Winter. And we may have a late start to Spring. Probably will be a wet Summer.

It was so cool today. Felt like it was back in late Winter. Tonight, I'm enjoying a hot meal, and shivering at the same time. Who would have thought that a cloud cover would have such an effect on Spring temperatures? Can't wait for the monsoonal season to start.
