Absolutely! We must burn all cruise ships with passengers on board! Did you not read the reason for the rule? Yes, from a personal perspective it is a minor misdemeanor but there are many people whose lives at risk if the ship were to catch fire through the butt being brought onboard by the winds.

And I'm a smoker.

I would like to hear the other side of the story before making a call on this. This is an extreme action for the ship to take, therefore I would suspect that the passengers attitude when picked up for throwing the cigarette over the side may have had a large part to play in this.

I'm not too proud to say you are correct in this with regard to the pyramid-shaped decks of modern cruise liners, but utterly wrong with regard to the old-style design.

I was on five global trips on ocean liners before the age of 19, and thousands smoked on each of these trips in all sorts of weather. WWII troop ships carried thousands of puffing soldiers from 'A' to 'B' without the slightest problem with fires.

Millions of ocean voyages were made by passenger ships ove a period of decades in which smoking was indulged in by a large percentage of the passengers ... with no incidents of fire caused by cigarette butts.

But them came the newly designed ocean cruise liners with their many residential decks stacked upon one another at an angle.

I have conceded the point to Seta, Belgarion, and perhaps the action taken was to impress upon all and sundry that this fire hazard is not to be taken lightly

That's not to say there aren't Smoking Rooms on these cruise liners.

Wherever you find people in this world, there you will find people smoking.

Tribes in the middle of the Amazon jungle, or in the New Guinea highlands, or in the mountains, or down by the sea - tribes had taken up smoking quite independently of one another hundreds of years ago.

Some Westerners still like to relax with a cigarette over a drink, or whenever.

Disclaimer: I haven't touched a cigarette for about 20 years now.

Alcohol consumption is infinitely more hazardous to society, the family, the workplace, and to the individual.

I haven't touched alcohol for 27 years, and so you'll have to drink alone.  Smiley

It should be smoke free, like all other public transport.

"But kicking the habit may also be behind a rise in the number of people diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a new study suggests.

Previous research has linked smokers to a reduced risk of Parkinson's disease, thought to be as a result of the nicotine in cigarettes protecting the brain in some way.

A new study by researchers in Minnesota has suggested anti-smoking campaigns from the late 40s and 50s could be behind increased prevalence of Parkinson's disease decades later".

I think they're on shaky ground with that one.
