Bill Shorten hit with legal threats over slogan
May 25th, 2016 at 9:47am

A Queensland bank is threatening to sue Labor leader Bill Shorten for allegedly stealing their "people first" slogan for his election campaign.

Lawyers for Heritage Bank says Mr Shorten campaigning on "putting people first" creates the impression the bank "is affiliated or has endorsed the Labor Party", The Courier Mail reports.

The bank has claimed a customer confronted a branch manager accusing it of being a "supporter of the ALP" and "threatened to withdraw his substantial term deposits".

"Despite reassurance from the branch manager that the ALP and Heritage Bank are not affiliated in any way, the customer was not dissuaded from his ultimate conclusion that the Heritage Bank is a 'supporter' of the ALP," the bank claims.

Mr Shorten has so far stood firm, saying the cease-and-desist threats are politically motivated.

Heritage Bank donated more than $10,000 to the Liberal National Party in 2014, and the bank's head of operations David Janetzki is running as the party's candidate in the state seat of Toowomba South.

The bank has threatened to start legal action as early as this afternoon if the ALP does not disassociate itself from the slogan.

Heritage is Australia's largest customer-owned bank. With a history going back to 1875, we've always been in the business of helping Australians realise their financial dreams and enrich their lives. As a customer-owned bank, instead of paying dividends to shareholders, our profits go towards giving our customers competitive interest rates and lower (or no) fees whenever we can. We call this the People first way of doing business. - https://www.heritage.com.au/about-heritage

Go to their website and you'll see the slogan in their logo. It's been there a long time. https://www.heritage.com.au/

In terms of size its less than a tenth as big as Bendigo.

Additionally according to Wiki, its smaller than CUA, so its not even Australias largest customer owned bank

Labor uses the words "People First" in an 8 week (well 6 now as 2 have gone by) & a bank decides it can make an extra bit of cash plus throwing some mud on their party of choice opponents.

How long before the commonwealth bank sues everybody for using the words "which" & "bank" over the period of their lives?

Huh

Admittedly in Heritages defence, it is in Qld, so a two word slogan is all the locals can cope with.

I can't imagine they would have much chance of being successful if they launched legal action.  They are using two common words and it's hardly an unusual combination of words, so maybe the Queensland bank is just doing this to get a bit of free publicity.

All Shorten has to do is re-name the slogan People Smugglers First. Fixed.
