THESE are the first pictures of significant upgrades to the Nauru hospital and village where asylum seekers are being housed.
The first phase of the hospital upgrade, including a surgical wing, is set to open this month as part of $20 million in annual aid provided to the island nation by Australia.
The Daily Telegraph can also reveal that since the detention centre became an “open centre”, allowing refugees to roam freely around the island, lifesavers patrol the beaches and playgrounds have been built.
Refugees are also encouraged to play both AFL and soccer.
Cabinet ministers who have visited the facility privately claim it is in better shape than some Aboriginal communities in Australia.
Nauru will continue to be used as an offshore processing facility instead of Australia after the High Court last week ruled by a six to one majority that Australia’s involvement was constitutional.
International Development Minister Steven Ciobo said it was disappointing “misleading information” had been spread about the state of the hospital and facilities on Nauru.
Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said the new wing of the hospital was better than some rural hospitals.
“The hospital is of at least the same standard as I saw operating for our troops in the Middle East, and certainly much better than some I’ve seen in regional Australia,’’ he said.
