My last camry I gave to one of my sons.
I was just bored of it. Really nice engine - the 3 litre V6 cylinder. It has over 300,000 on it

Bought an older 2.2 litre camry for another son. Faultless car, about 300,000 on it now.

I have a newer 2.4 litre camry, 5 speed auto.
Only a bit over 200,000 kms on it. Sort of like brand new really.

Not the rav4.

The driving position is OK, but it has no guts whatsoever.

yes.
If you want a boring reliable car that will get you there and get you back year after year after year after year till you are bored of it, get a Toyota.

The further west I have been into the desert, the more Toyotas I see.
The locals there, toyotas is about all they have.

I used to have a Subaru (liberty) before my current car ... great car, the only thing I can fault was the rear seat didn't split down ..other than that, never had a problem with it.

I still prefer my toyotas.

I drive a '09 Forrester.  The missus drives a '15 XV. Love the Soobs; spacious, responsive, quiet. My car's like a quick,  comfy Pantec; zips around with a nifty 4 cylinder boxer engine and can still fit in bikes and tents.

I would pick the Forester for a city car... but I'm not overly impressed with their boxer motor...

too hard to work on and ive seen too many end up in the bin..

I don't see your logic in comparing the two cars in fact..

And I wouldn't have thought that either of them would be a perfect "city car".

On a different note, aren't Subarus rather thirsty when it comes to fuel consumption?

They are thirsty and the fixed priced servicing is a rip. That said i really rate tbe  boxer engine and the transmission is brilliant.

Ya gotta go the Subaru!  I had a Forester XLT a few years ago until I traded it in my my truck.  Loved that car!   Comfortable, well appointed and 0 - 60 K in 3 seconds!   Do yourself a favour if you buy one and use premium unleaded.   RAV 4 is a bit - shall we say - poofy - for a bloke.  Get a 'horn' car and buy the Subbie

I like the height. Bad back so getting in and out is easier. 95% in city but it's nice to have AWD for holidays so can go for a spin on the beach.

The RAV4 has surprisingly poo fuel economy too.  Only has a 50l tank, and you'll get 480 - 530km from it, depending on whether you have "Eco mode" enabled on it.

The 2015 Suby has that stop start thingy which improves the fuel economy.

He is right though a really attractive car is now very much not. The rear of the current model looks awful.

IMO there is not much difference either should be OK, I would test one of each and see what you get and how much they cost.

Do you always have this indecision problem, Dear?  Do you have the same dilemma with ovens, cars for teenagers, furniture and lawnmowers for example?  Goodness me, all that after putting your arse on the line in some God forsaken Country.  This is intolerable Dear after you've done so much assisting them with AIDS, and UXOs.  You still haven't told us which Country put you through all this torture Dear.  Did you forget?

I have heard of good reports about Hyundai diesels.
Most SUVs are possibly better on a 'small' 4 cyl diesel than a 'big' 4 cyl petrol.

Hyundai make their own sheet metal and autos I also heard.

I am about to buy a new car and my choice is the Subaru XV. Toyoto are the most over rated car on the road. I've owned about twenty five cars in my life and the only two that had motors die were Toyoto.

Mitsubishi probably are underrated given they are Japanese made. Let's face it not too many cars that come out of Japan are dogs.Although you have to be careful some of the cheaper models of the Japanese cars are being made in India and Thailand now. Call me a snob but I'm buggered if I'm paying Japanese prices for a Thai made car. A work mate said to me just the other day that her brother was a mechanic and that he cringes every time a European car is driven into his workshop. Over priced overrated and over here. His comment to her was always buy a Japanese or Korean car. Hyundai seem to have a pretty good name for themself nowadays. I've only ever driven one for a couple of days when I hired an i30 in Cairns for some day trips. It seemed pretty good for a small car but my greatest memory of it was how economical it was.

yes, european cars are wildly overrated.

Did you see my 'marketing fail' post ?

We cycle most weekends.
Other weekend cycled up to a new business, 'German car specialist.' it said on the building.
'Good idea' I thinks, while cycling closer. A repair shop that specialises in repairing german cars.
They have a courtesy car parked out the front.
It's all painted well, signs on it, addresses, contact phone #, email addys.

Guess what make the car is ?
Yep, a Toyota Camry.
