Nick Kyrgios beats Andy Murray for first time
Jan 7th, 2016 at 10:06am

Perhaps if Australia had included Kyrgios in the Davis cup squad they might not have lost to UK.

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/jan/07/nick-kyrgios-breakthrough-win-again...

Quote:
Nick Kyrgios has broken his losing streak against Andy Murray by beating world No. 2 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in Wednesday night’s Hopman Cup blockbuster at Perth Arena.

Kyrgios entered the match having lost all four of his previous matches to Murray, three in grand slams last year.

But with Murray battling a leg injury, Kyrgios ran the two-time grand slam winner ragged during the clinical display.

“I actually did promise a couple of my friends that next time I played Andy, I was going to beat him,” Kyrgios said. “He’s in the prime of his career. He’s been playing some great tennis. Every time I’ve played him I haven’t played bad.

“He’s just a great player and today I knew what my game plan was going to be and how he was going to play.”

The tie between Australia Green and Great Britain was sent to a live mixed doubles after Daria Gavrilova failed to successfully serve for the win in her 6-7 (7-2), 6-2, 7-5 loss to Heather Watson

Gavrilova was up 5-3 in the third set, but the naturalised Australian lost the last four games in a match that lasted 165 minutes.

But Australia Green got there eventually, securing a 2-1 tie win after midnight with a 6-2, 6-7 (7-0), 11-9 (match tiebreak) win in the mixed doubles.

The result means Australia Green will reach Saturday’s final if they can beat France on Friday night.

“It was a lot of fun. That match tiebreak was one of my favourite tiebreaks I’ve ever played,” Kyrgios said.

Murray appeared troubled by a right thigh injury during his singles loss, but he played down the injury after the match.

“It was just the same thing as the other day,” Murray said. “I’m still moving fine around the court, it’s just a little bit sore. I’ll be fine. No problem.”

Kyrgios kept his cool for most of his singles contest against Murray, but he became engaged in a quick exchange of words with a member of the crowd while scores were locked up at 4-4 in the second set.

Kyrgios lost the game, but he saved a break point shortly after before going on to win the match in a tiebreak.

The world No. 30 said his breakthrough win over Murray would give him a huge dose of confidence heading into the Australian Open.

“It doesn’t matter what type of match you’re playing, you always want to win,” Kyrgios said.

“One hundred per cent he wanted to win that tonight. I thought it was a good match.

“He’s a true champion. He’ll come back and I’m sure he’ll be ready, and he’s a strong contender for the Australian Open.”

Maqqa spent too much time in it's wood shed mosque. Maqqa's right arm must be extremely muscle-bound.

Did you watch the match Fireball? I concede Andy was not at his best, but it wasn't a one sided game by any stretch and I still say Nick played great tennis to beat him.

Kyrgios is the greatest Aussie tennis talent ever

It was display of art and creative identity of a tennis genius.
At the same time It was really sad to watch how British colonial nationalism is so present in Australia.
British flags were absolutely everywhere and the crowd supported and celebrated Murray like their own giving an impression that the match was played rather in London than in Australian city Perth.
It was uncomfortable to watch how Australia was so far of being an independent nation with own flag, own head of state and national identity.
That night Kyrgios was only one who looked like Australian patriot among all others closet poms who came out of box.
With the majority of the Perth Arena crowd appearing to support the British star over their countryman, the 20-year-old appeared to take offence at some ofrnsive words hurled at him by unfrendly spectators.
For an outsider it was sad to watch this masochistic tirade and very shameful for someone who is considered as an Australian.
I am not sure whether Australia deserves such talent as Nick is.

good on Nick ... as long as he remains grounded and works hard, he'll go far. The problem with Australias tennis players is that as soon as they win a game or two they think they are invincible and concentrate on everything other than tennis
