SA ALP Premier Jay Weatherill wants to lift GST
Nov 27th, 2015 at 8:12am

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-11-27/weatherill-wants-gst-hike-for-the-sake-of-...

Quote:
South Australia's Labor Premier has pushed a GST increase higher up on the national agenda, outlining a radical plan he says will help the states overcome a health funding crisis.

Jay Weatherill told AM that taking the GST to 15 per cent is part of a broader tax plan to be put to his state and federal counterparts formally in a fortnight at a Council of Australian Governments meeting.

"We need additional revenue to meet the growing health care needs of our nation," Mr Weatherill said.

Mr Weatherill wants to lift the GST and let the Commonwealth keep the extra GST money - about $34 billion - which he suggested would be used on cutting company tax.

He then wants the states to get a share of about a fifth of the income tax raised by the Commonwealth.

He said he designed it that way as income tax is growing faster than the GST, and because the states pay for the rapidly growing health system.

"You need a taxation base which is growing at about the rate of growth of health care expenditure," he said.

"That's income tax. If we get a share of that that will more approximate our needs.

"We think this is the recipe for an agreement with the Commonwealth. That is why we have put this idea up.

"It gives us a fighting chance. At the moment we've got no chance. The only decisions in front of us are some horrible reductions in services or some massive increases in state taxation or user pays charges - they're just not things that the community is prepared to buy."

A Labor man with a backbone.

Labor should move this guy into the Federal party.

UNIONS REJECT OUTRIGHT SA PREMIER'S PLAN TO INCREASE GST TO 15%

26 November 2015
SA Unions.
SA Unions has today absolutely rejected a push by the South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill to increase the rate of the GST to 15%.

State Secretary, Joe Szakacs (pron sock-arch) says the announcement today is a fundamental betrayal of South Australian working people.

"Just eighteen months ago - the day before the last State election - Premier Weatherill promised he would stand up to Canberra and their plan for a GST increase".

"Today, he's failed the people of South Australia.  At the time, he said that any changes to the GST would hit working families the hardest, explaining that a rise in the GST would put a tax on food."

"He warned that if a State Liberal Government were to be elected, it would not stand up to Canberra and fight against a GST, that there would be little or no resistance to a bigger tax."

"His announcement today means he's failed to deliver on that promise."

Mr Szakacs says the Premier has been distracted by trying to be a player on the national political stage and a spruiker of the Abbott Turnbull GST agenda instead of standing up for the best interests of South Australian working people.

"People in the suburbs, in his own electorate, want a State Government that is working to create jobs - not a State Government that thinks it is okay for them to fork out more for life's essentials."

"Eleven million low and middle income workers will face huge hikes in their cost of living if the GST is increased.  This kind of regressive tax hits lower income workers three times harder than people on higher wages."

"We simply don't buy that the increase will help fund health and education - it's more likely to pay for cuts to corporate tax rates and personal income tax rates which only benefit the wealthy."

"Mr Weatherill - stop ignoring workers and be honest about the thousands of extra dollars this will cost families each year.  We need a tax system in which everyone pays their fair share and low and middle income earners aren't expected to do all the heavy lifting."

That concept is a valid one?  Australia's company tax rate is one of the highest in the OECD.

Companies provide jobs.  The more companies, the more jobs.  The more jobs, the more income tax and GST revenues collected.

How does a Govt attract companies?  Lower the company tax rate?  Make dealing inside the Australian economy more attractive.

A Govt shouldn't scare companies away by increasing company tax, and advocating mining & carbon taxes.....

Weatherill also wants to put nuclear power on the agenda.  That's why I said....

Why worry about people that have made a lifestyle choice to be poor, seems silly to me, all the premiers want to raise the GST, they have to first work out how they can pin all the blame for that rise on the Feds though.   Grin

Difficult when the Feds have withdrawn healthcare spending from the states putting them in the position of having no other option to fund health care than to ask for a GST increase and therefore take the blame.

The Fed game is to force the states to ask and for them to avoid taking any blame for it.

Leave GST and cut corporate tax anyway. Piss off the federal duplication for starters. Can anybody tell me what the federal health minister's responsibilities actually are.

Your only concern with the "poor"  is to use them as a weapon to beat the right wing over the head with, we created a capitalist society so that they could all relax on the dole for the rest of their lives if they don't feel like working, what more do you want from us?
