TURKEY shot down a Russian warplane near its border with Syria after it ignored repeated warnings that it violated the country’s airspace, Turkish authorities say.
Russia’s defence ministry has confirmed the warplane downed on Syria border by Turkey was Russian Su-24, however it denies the jet crossed into Turkish skies.
The fate of the pilots is not yet known. Russia’s defence ministry says they ejected from the plane with parachutes but they have had no contact with them since. One is believed to have been captured on the ground by a Syrian rebel group aligned with Turkey.
Turkish authorities say they warned the Russian plane several times before shooting it down with F-16 fighter jets.
The plane exploded in the air and the fireball fell on a Turkmen mountain on the Syrian side of the border, CNN-Turk and NTV televisions reported.
Moscow claims it can prove the aircraft was over Syria for the whole flight.
