Deniers are getting hotter under the collar. The temperature's rising:

Quote:
Adelaide's air-conditioned central bus station will stay open around the clock as the city swelters through a heatwave.

The mercury reached 41.1C in Adelaide on Wednesday, and the Bureau of Meteorology says the temperature won't fall below 40C until a mild change on Sunday.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese says the Franklin St station will stay open for 24 hours to offer relief from the heat.

The temperature in Adelaide is set to reach 40C on Thursday, with severe fire danger forecast for the northwest pastoral, lower southeast and Mount Lofty Ranges districts.

The temperature's rising:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/weather/2015/12/14/record-warmth-december-heat/772...

Quote:
A freakish December heat wave has shattered more than 1,000 high temperature records in the central and eastern U.S. so far this month, and after a brief weekend cool-down, the warmth will likely return in time for Christmas.

"Another big surge of warmth is in store for the week of Christmas in the eastern U.S.," AccuWeather meteorologist Paul Pastelok said. "A number of locations in the East could be looking at highs well into the 60s to near 70 on Christmas Day."

This does not bode well for folks in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic dreaming of a white Christmas, nor for ski areas that depend on both natural and man-made snow for their business.

As of Monday, only 3% of the Northeast was snow-covered, compared with 81% on this date last year, according to the National Weather Service. Of the dozens of Northeast and Mid-Atlantic ski areas listed on the Ski Central website, only a handful are open, mainly in far northern New England.

Buffalo remained snowless on Monday, marking the longest the city has gone in a snow season without receiving its first measurable snow, weather.com reported.

How high will it go? We're having a heat wave:

http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2015/dec/17/melbourne-braces-for-heatw...

Quote:
The temperature in Melbourne could reach 40C as Victoria braces for its hottest December day in five years and the government warns of the dangers and death toll associated with extreme heat.

The temperature is forecast to reach 39C in Melbourne on Saturday, but the Bureau of Meteorology has said it could tip over the 40C mark if the expected clouds dissipate.

Extreme heat warning for South Australia, with temperatures hitting 42C

The city is expected to reach 35C on Thursday and 36C on Friday and remain warm overnight, before cooling again on Monday.

Adelaide is already in the grips of a heatwave and is forecast to swelter through three more days of higher than 40C – 42C on Thursday, 41C on Friday and 42C on Saturday – before dropping to 30C on Sunday.

A bit to go before breaking Melbourne record of 46.4oC.

What did we ever do before Wikipedia recorded how miserable we can be.

Areas affected      South Australia, Victoria, Southern New South Wales, Northern Tasmania, ACT

Hopetoun, Victoria
Reported casualties      374 deaths[1]
2,000+ treated for heat-related effects
The early 2009 southeastern Australia heat wave was a heat wave that commenced in late January and led to record-breaking prolonged high temperatures in the region. The heat wave is considered one of the, if not the, most extreme in the region's history.[2] During the heat wave, fifty separate locations set various records for consecutive, highest daytime and overnight temperatures. The highest temperature recorded during the heat wave was 48.8 °C (119.8 °F) in Hopetoun, Victoria, a record for the state.[3] Many locations through the region recorded all-time high temperatures including capital cities Adelaide, which reached its third-highest temperature, 45.7 °C (114.3 °F), and Melbourne, which recorded its highest ever temperature on record, 46.4 °C (115.5 °F). Both cities broke records for the most consecutive days over 40 °C (104 °F), while Mildura, Victoria recorded an all-time record twelve consecutive days over 43 °C (109 °F).
The exceptional heat wave was caused by a slow moving high-pressure system that settled over the Tasman Sea, with a combination of an intense tropical low located off the North West Australian coast and a monsoon trough over Northern Australia, which produced ideal conditions for hot tropical air to be directed down over southeastern Australia.[3] The heat began in South Australia on 25 January but became more widespread over southeast Australia by 27 January. A weak cool change moved over the southern coastal areas bringing some relief on 30 January,[3] including Melbourne, where the change arrived that evening, dropping temperatures to an average of 30.8 °C (87.4 °F). Higher temperatures returned on the following weekend with Melbourne recording its hottest day since records began in 1855, 46.4 °C (115.5 °F), also the highest temperature ever recorded in an Australian capital city.[4]
The heat wave generated extreme fire conditions during the peak of the 2008-09 Australian bushfire season, causing many bushfires in the affected region, contributing to the extreme bushfire conditions on 7 February, also known as the Black Saturday bushfires, which claimed 173 lives in Victoria.[5]
Ten months after this heat wave, a second struck the same region in November 2009.

The temperature's rising.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-12-18/adelaide-braces-heatwave-man-remains-criti...

Quote:
An apprentice is in a coma after collapsing on a work site during the worst heatwave on record in Adelaide during the month of December.

Travis Mellor, 17, was into just his third day of work when he was rushed unconscious to hospital in an ambulance due to a heat stroke.

He is believed to have just started a carpentry apprenticeship and was working on an eastern suburbs building site.

The hot spell in Adelaide is tipped to officially become a heatwave today if the city reaches more than 40C for the third consecutive day.

It has already reached 37C and is tipped to spike at 42C this afternoon.

Adelaide forecast:

Friday - Very hot, partly cloudy, 42C
Saturday - Very hot, partly cloudy, 43C
Sunday - Morning shower or two, 27C
Monday - Partly cloudy, 27C
Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) state secretary Aaron Cartledge said Mr Mellor was drifting in and out of coma and his family feared he could face long-term health issues.

"He's facing a real battle at the moment, some serious medical issues that are facing him, things like issues with his kidneys at the moment," he said.

"He also looks like he's got a lung infection."

The CFMEU said heatstroke was a serious condition that could cause lifelong injuries.

It said there had been cases of paralysis in Queensland workers as a result of heat stroke.

Be prepared for the heat

Heatwaves kill far more people than other natural disasters. Adequate preparation is essential, especially for people at high risk such as the elderly and young children. ABC Emergency has a checklist of things you can do to be ready.
Mr Cartledge said employers needed to understand their obligations not to put workers at risk in extreme heat.

"It is utter negligence that his employer did not make a decision to stop work when the temperature had reached 41.5 degrees," he said.

"Travis is still a child, who had no idea of the danger of toiling in those kinds of conditions."

Adelaide's temperature reached 42.9C on Thursday afternoon and dropped to 23C overnight, although Coober Pedy and Woomera, in the state's north, both experienced a much hotter minimum of 29C.

BoM's definition of a heatwave for Adelaide is five consecutive days with maximum temperatures at or above 35C or three consecutive days at or above 40C.

Adelaide has never before recorded a run of four days above 40C in December, with Saturday tipped to peak at 43C before a change on Sunday is expected to reduce maximums to 27C.

South Australia BoM acting regional director John Nairn yesterday said it was a sign of climate change.

Mark Anolak from Bureau of Meteorology said SA was is in the grip of a nasty front.

"Currently the high over the Tasman Sea is really stationary and that's resulting in hot, dry northerly winds across South Australia."

New record in South Australia, 4 consecutive days over 40oC.

http://www.9news.com.au/national/2015/12/19/08/08/south-australia-heatwave-set-t...

Quote:
South Australia’s heatwave is set to peak today, with temperatures expected to hit 44ºC in Adelaide and the SES urging people to stay safe.

The heatwave broke a record when temperatures hit 40ºC in Adelaide about 11am (ACDT) today, securing the city's first ever run of four days above 40º C in December. The previous record was three days.

More than 100 people have been admitted to hospital for heat-related issues over the past few days, including an apprentice carpenter who collapsed on a building site on Wednesday and remained in a coma yesterday.

'12 January 1939 Heatwave
Alison Painter

12 January 1939    Heatwave

On 12 January 1939 Adelaide recorded its highest maximum temperature ever when the mercury reached 117.7° Fahrenheit or 47.6° Celsius, surpassing the old record of 116.3°F in 1858. For 14 days, from New Year's Eve until 13 January, the city sweltered, with nine days over the century. Fires raged through the Adelaide hills on 10 January with most damage done at Heathfield and through Crafers, Aldgate and the National Park at Belair. Twenty houses were destroyed and many hundreds of sheep and cattle killed. The hottest spot in the State was Kyancutta where a top temperature of 120.7°F or 49.2°C was recorded.
This heatwave was worse than the period of 11 days of record temperatures experienced in February 1930. Then the temperature was over the century on seven days with the average being 100.5°F. It was the second longest spell of over 90°F heat for 73 years. Prior to this the hottest day for February was 113.6°F in 1899. Fortunately there was no report of bushfires in the 1930 spell.

In Australia, perhaps.

'Cold weather kills 20 times as many people as hot weather, according to an international study analyzing over 74 million deaths in 384 locations across 13 countries. The findings, published in The Lancet, also reveal that deaths due to moderately hot or cold weather substantially exceed those resulting from extreme heat waves or cold spells.'

Tell that to the kid in a coma in Adelaide that he is lucky it wasn't cold or he'd be dead.

The present heat waves portends a roasting hot summer for Australia as the centre warms up and the heat spreads. Melbourne is one week way from longest day and the temperature for January, February and possibly March will be fierce.

Don't you just love long term projections, when anything more than 5 days out is problematic?
