A major grassroots effort to overturn California's recently passed SB277 forced vaccination bill came to an end yesterday as volunteers reached the Monday deadline to submit signatures they have worked tirelessly to collect over a three-month period.

On September 16, referendum leaders estimated that they had received at least 300,000 signatures, and two weeks later there was buzz that they had reached close to half a million signatures.

A major grassroots effort to overturn California's recently passed SB277 forced vaccination bill came to an end yesterday as volunteers reached the Monday deadline to submit signatures they have worked tirelessly to collect over a three-month period.

To immediately halt the mandatory vaccine bill and qualify it for the November 2016 ballot, volunteers needed to gather 366,000 signatures.

As the September 28 deadline neared, @SB277Referendum leaders appeared excited and optimistic about reaching their goal, with the initiative's leader Libertarian Tim Donnelly posting photos of boxes stacked high and loaded with signed petitions.

On September 16, referendum leaders estimated that they had received at least 300,000 signatures, and two weeks later there was buzz that they had reached close to half a million signatures.

Leaders also announced that they received an extremely generous donation of $150,000 from an in-state donor, bringing their total funds raised to over $300,000 – a remarkable undertaking for a grassroots effort that was given so little time to prepare.





SB277 Referendum volunteers suspect sabotage from within as panic ensues

Despite the positive social media posts leading up to the deadline, things started to go awry once volunteers began submitting their signatures, with petitioners citing huge discrepancies in various counties and some claiming that they only received credit for a third of what was turned in to referendum managers Donnelly and Lauren Stephens, who were responsible for submitting the petitions to validation companies.

While signature numbers are still unknown, what is clear is that the number of signatures validated thus far is much lower than previously estimated. Below are some estimates of the discrepancies:

• San Diego County submitted eight boxes of signatures but only received one in return
• Orange County is missing 6,000 signatures
• San Bernardino County is missing 8,000
• Sacramento County is missing 15,000 – 20,000 signatures

While signature totals are still unknown, only an estimated 100,000 of the potential half a million signatures have been accounted for – meaning somehow, hundreds of thousands of signatures are missing.

The missing signatures have led some volunteers to claim that the referendum was sabotaged, and likely from within, prompting organizers to file a request for an investigation to the California Secretary of State.

The large discrepancies in signature counts is generating panic among volunteers, causing some to point fingers at referendum leaders, with some volunteers alleging that they dropped off many more signatures with Stephens than she turned in to the validation companies.

Stephens reportedly claims that she did not discard any petitions, but she has failed to explain where the signatures have gone, an odd occurrence considering that two weeks prior she publicly announced they were expecting at least 300K signatures – meaning one would imagine she would have noticed that the number of signatures being turned in was far lower than her estimates.

Despite repeated calls to Donnelly and Stephens, they have not returned our request for comment.

While both Donnelly and Stephens have remained eerily silent during the chaos that's recently ensued, although vague, Donnelly finally issued a statement yesterday on the referendum's Facebook page (view the entire post here):

Never before in my political experience have I witnessed such extensive and determined opposition to a campaign. This opposition was from very powerful special interests, namely the pharmaceutical lobby and a [sic] big pharmaceutical companies. The lengths to which these forces would go knew no bounds.

Judges in India's Supreme Court have demanded answers after children died during a controversial cervical cancer vaccine trial.
Young tribal girls received shots of pharmaceutical company Merck's Gardasil vaccine and Cervarix, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.
The vaccines are given to girls as young as nine in many countries - including the UK and the US - to protect against the human papilloma virus, one of the major causes of cervical cancer.
But the Indian court yesterday heard a challenge by campaigners who claim the study - funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation - failed to obtain the informed consent of the children or their parents.
They say that a 'study' carried out for the foundation by a US organisation was in fact an illegal drugs trial.

The petitioners have also asked judges to look into the way trials were conducted into Merck's new cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil 9.
A MailOnline investigation published earlier this month uncovered claims that children as young as nine suffered side-effects after being used as unwitting human guinea pigs for the new drug.
Gardasil 9, which is expected to be worth £1.2 billion a year in sales, has already been approved for use in the US and could be available in the UK later in the year.

At a hearing of India's Supreme Court in Delhi yesterday judges expressed frustration that the country's government had failed to provide answers to what had happened during the earlier trials of the original Gardasil and Cervarix.
They gave the government a month to explain what action had been taken to investigate and what efforts had been made to obtain the consent of those taking part in the trials.
They wanted to know whether there had been any follow-up or monitoring of the girls to see whether they had suffered adverse health consequences.
And the judges also ordered the government to produce an opinion on the issue of liability and compensation.

Lawyers for the campaigners who brought the case said they were pleased with the fact that, for the first time, liability and compensation for the victims had come up in court.
'It is a very encouraging development that the judges are now discussing accountability and not just accountability but also compensation, so the tone of the hearing today was very positive for us because it's clear from all the parties, including from government reports, that there were, at best, serious irregularities and, at worst, gross violations of fundamental human rights,' said Kerry McBroom, one of the lawyers.
An investigation by an Indian parliamentary committee had previously concluded that the trials amounted to a serious breach of trust and medical ethics amounting to child abuse and 'a clear cut violation of the human rights of these girl children and adolescents'.
The committee's report said it had been established that clinical trials of the vaccines had been carried out 'under the pretext of an observation/demonstration project' in violation of all laws and regulations laid down by the government for such trials.
The group accused of carrying out the trial under the 'pretext' of carrying out an academic study - PATH - said it 'strongly disagreed with the findings, conclusions, and tone of the released report and its disregard of the evidence and facts.'
