When a pair of four-legged friends were hours away from being euthanised, it took just one photo to save them.

Kala and Keira were awaiting adoption by a volunteer foster carer at the Angels Among Us Pet Rescue centre in the US state of Georgia.

But on the day they were scheduled to be put to sleep, staff at the centre made a last minute plea to Facebook, uploading a photo of the pair in an embrace that is (almost) too adorable to believe.

Two hours and six minutes later the furry friends were buckled up and on their way to a new home, all thanks to their now-viral heartwarming image.

It looks ok and I should imagine there would be tons of working dogs up for adoption.

Check out PAWS rescue - there might be one in your area.

Also, check with your local council or dog shelter (if it is independent from council), plus RSPCA (not that I like them overly) have some shop fronts opening up in lots of places - they do some dog re homing (at least where I live).

It seems to me (and I may be wrong) but if you are keen to sponsor it would be nice to do it locally. One day you may get the urge to see the dog after all (I read you're not keen on dogs that's all).

Yeah, the kids are all excited too.

I so wish I was an animal person...but I'm just not. Plus, animals aggravate my asthma etc.

That's ok, I'm into human babies, serious organic fruit n veg growing etc...so it's all good.

The impt thing I learned out of all this?

Don't think that the only way you can help out is by taking an unwanted puppy home. There's heaps of other options.
