I for one don't think smoking should be banned in prisons.

I am of the opinion that deprivation of liberty is enough punishment.

I think there should be designated smoking areas to accommodate for non-smokers but i think a complete ban is unfair.

If you can't be a good example, you have to be a horrible warning.

Yes I know, start giving people this kind of autonomy and who knows what kind of liberties humans will have next? But seriously, an argument of "if you give them this, why not just give them everything" is rather foolish and misses the argument completely.
If you want to treat prisoners as man babies who have no control over any aspect of their life, then be ready for an even greater turn around of people becoming accustomed and ultimately dependant to/on prison life.
If you are however of the opinion that giving prisoners freedom in a minor aspect of their life, whereby they can choose to do or not do something will result in the primary goal of incarceration (rehabilitation) being achieved more effectively, then welcome to the argument.
Subsequently, do remember that morality and the ability to do the right thing only exists when there is the ability to do the immoral/wrong thing. Governments telling people what to do should be as minimised as possible if we ever hope to rehabilitate people and allow them to learn how to function in wider society.

In a time of universal deceit — telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)

Glib. We're talking about people who have abused their freedoms. They have become, more or less, "wards of the state". How can the state, having taken responsibility for their every need, allow them to "self harm", in such a way?

Not necassarily, many people in prison are in remand waiting trial. Some  may be completely innocent of their charges.

It's a great way to get people off the cigarettes. Deny them their nicotine whilst they go through prison. Perhaps they will get over their moodiness derived from nicotine addiction, and get out to become more productive members of society.
