Great time of year to be there as well!  Wimbledon....and even the Ashes coming up.

Lakes District is superb, as you will soon see.  Say 'G'day' to my daughter in Edinburgh!

Did you catch up with Hicks in London?

Thanks Aussie we will be in Edinburgh in a week and a bit.  Going to ardrossan for a few days then over to Edinburgh and Perth.

There was a guy in a Beemer with a really big hairy Greek Sheila in tow going into a swanky restraint near here,  not sure whether it was our man though

Nah.....that could not have been Hicks.  He's into far better sheet than crappy Beemers now.   You're right about the bloody expense...and the exchange rate just sucks big time.  Best way to enjoy those Village Pubs is to travel by car.  Fantastic.  You'll love it.

Is a War Office anything like a Wife?

I envy you. I've never travelled overseas and I want to so badly that sometimes it hurts. I'll do it when the kids are a bit older and finances permit, but geez it feels like such a long way off. I have so many places I want to see and the UK would be my first stop. One day...

In the meantime, have enough fun for the both of us. I hope you get to see lots of exciting places.

Are you a history buff?

My brother lives in Norway. Apparently Oslo is one of the most expensive cities in the world to visit, but worth it.

We were there in 2012 and I can say there are many, many good spots to visit & look at!

On the way you may be heading, I can recommend -
1) Bath & Surrounds.
2) Snowdonia National Park - Betws-y-Coed is worth a look around
3) Liverpool - particularly the Beatles museum, in the Docks area.
4) The Lakes area is great - The towns of Keswick, Kendall & nearby Carlisle are also worth a look.
5) Prestwick & Troon are great on the coast. Troon is the home of golf.
6) Further North, the towns of Glasgow, Oban & the lochs are great! Kings Knoll Hotel @ Oban is a good place to stay & has great views out over the town.
7) Inverness is a must & the sun doesn't set until after 10pm.
8) Cairngorms National Park is also worth a look & Aviemore is a nice town.
9) Believe it or not, there is a town call Perth on route to Edinburgh.
10) Edinburgh is great, but it can be cold - Edinburgh Castle is a MUST!

We caught a flight from London to Edinburgh, so we didn't see much of the East coast, except for Dover, where we caught the ferry to Calais in France.

Cheers & enjoy!

Oh & I still can't believe, they hauled those huge rocks, to Stonehenge!

Eating out and our general grocery bill is mich cheaper here than in Melbourne.
Flights around Europe are like £100 but we used to pay $500+ just to go to Townsville.
Mortgage is 40% cheaper.
Bought two cars for less than one in Australia and im taxed less.

I liked living in Australia but we as a family just couldnt really afford it.

Monetary wise we are much better off over here.

What?  Petrol nearly double the cost per litre,  clobber expensive, good steak 33 pounds a kilo,  beer and wine comparative, I look at the price and double it as a rough comparison, and I reckon most things over here are more than Aussie

Thats not my experience,
Petrol yes.

When i was moved from Melbourne to London and the company tried to work out a fair salary etc, they engaged consultants on cost comparison.

They ranged both ways

Mobile phones (2.5p per text v 25c), mortgages, flight and travel, clothes all cheaper here.
Petrol and renting were cheaper in Melbourne.

Energy bills. I used to pay $400 per quarter. Here its £75.

In my personal experience i am better off.

Taxed a lot less too.

You tend to use air travel a lot more now cods.
Im flying to Hannover tomorrow night for £65.
If i wanted to go to north Queensland when i was in Aus i had to pay well north of $500.

Im just saying im better off here and Australia i found pretty extortionate.
I had a mortgage of $4,400 per month and here its less than £1,900.

True - horses for courses.  It is lovely here at the moment, our car rental was cheaper, and we are going to the Portsmouth arms for a fe beers.   I do like the fact that you can do everything, from pharmacy, alcohol, clothes, groceries in one store - stains bury sin our case.  It is definitely the way to go

1,900 is now $4,000 with the current FX yeah given your currency is dropping down quicker than a Bangkok hooker.
However salary doesn't work that way.
I wasn't paid 2x my UK salary otherwise I'd have been on $350,000!!!

Would have been nice mind and we'd not have left.

Bigvic - you in Portsmouth?
I went there few weeks ago for first time in ages.
They've done a lot down at the Naval yard by the Victory.
Lot of pubs, restaurants and new apartments.

Didn't think too much of the Mary Rose but the victory is awesome.

I am n Basingstoke at the moment.  I was in Portsmouth for my submarine course in 1976 but would love to go back to see it again.  I was based at gosport for a couple of years and enjoyed it

We did go to hayling  island for fish and chips, pickled onions and eggs.   Looked over to Portsmouth quite fondly

I drive through Basingstoke now and again when the M25 craps itself.
Classic London overspill town. You wouldn't really go there unless you are specifically going there for a reason.
You should come up to Henley-on-Thames. Proper English country town on the river and no shortage of pubs to sit in the garden.

Mind it's not exactly sunny this afternoon.

Lake District is fantastic though. Even up in Carlisle there's a lot to see.

pansi it should make us all appreciate what we have back here... but it doesnt always work like that does it???..

look at the gst look at the whingers... yet we have one of the lowest on the world...remarkable...

we should be more grateful instead of the constant hand outs we seem to be looking for all the time.

Don't give away your itinerary, Andrei.. the AFLF might find you... (Anti Fracking Liberation Front)...

white people?

what do white people have to do with anything?  Undecided

I wouldn't mind going to Europe one day but it would be my second choice to countries like, China, India, Japan and the Mrs wants to go to Canada...

even some of the Indonesian getaways look quite attractive...

I guess I enjoy places that will give me a more of a Cultural Difference..  Smiley

The war office and I are travelling serenely through the UK at the moment.  Having a good time but wow, is it expensive!   Petrol nearly double the price, meat is very dear and clothes are much dearer than Oz.   done the Stonehenge, Salisbury cathedral and some beaut little pubs.  Heading up to the lakes district on mondaythen bonnie Scotland.   Weather at the moment is great as well

That's because you're down south.  The North of England and the rest of the UK are much cheaper than the South of England.

Great time of year to be there as well!  Wimbledon....and even the Ashes coming up.

Lakes District is superb, as you will soon see.  Say 'G'day' to my daughter in Edinburgh!

Did you catch up with Hicks in London?

And there's the Rugby World Cup in the autumn.
