Brand names that become generic
Apr 25th, 2015 at 1:58pm

I just heard a 45 year old talk about "hoovering" the room. I'm pretty sure she would have never even seen a Hoover vacuum cleaner.
I thought I was back in the 1950s.

It's funny how some brand names just stick in the cultural memory. Can anybody think of some others.
I just love this social history stuff.

Know the enemies of a civil society by their public behaviour, by their fraudulent claim to be liberal-progressive, by their propensity to lie and, above all, by their attachment to authoritarianism.

Lot of good ones thrown up here. Kleenex and Esky stand out.
Doesn't matter what kind of cool-box you have, you call it an esky.
Getting this kind of placement in the language has got to be worth more than all the advertising placements they could ever buy.

WD-40.

IBM (for any Intel/Windows PC, whether actually built by IBM or not - has largely dropped from favour).

'Durries' (originally from 'Bull Durham', a popular brand of tobacco).
