I would expect our parliamentarians to adhere to the same standards as everyone else in the workplace with regard to drugs and alcohol. Alcohol - drink in your own time; do not show up to work intoxicated or with a hangover; etc.

We do know that Abbott has overstepped the limits on safe responsible drinking from time to time. Remember the Sunrise interview where he turned up hung over? That interview was a disaster.

He should do what Hawke did. Hawke was well known for his alcohol consumption, but he chose to remain teetotal while in office. It's a good example that other parliamentarians should follow. If not, they should limit consumption to levels considered safe, such as a glass of wine or two with a meal and no more than a few standard drinks a week.

This would not be unreasonable.

However, it is unlikely that this would get implemented. It is rare for anyone who sets their own working conditions to introduce this for themselves. How many company boards submit to random drug testing?
