Political history fans might find this worthwhile. Archbishop Mannix had a big influence over the Irish Catholic Labor vote in Victoria in the early part of the 20th century.

Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) talks about her life.
She never stops laughing, what a character. Worth listening just to hear her describe her schooldays.

I admit to being wrong here. I previously had a strong dislike of Jane Caro, not because of her feminism but because she is such a strident critic of everything non-left.
But I didn't realise she was an author and in particular of a book on Elizabeth I, who is something of a feminist icon herself. And not only an author but a beautifully sensitive reciter of Elizabethan poetry.
Now I'm an admirer.

J G Winant was the US Ambassador to Britain from 1941 to 1945.
He was a confidant of FDR, even though he came from the Republican party, and he was a close friend of Churchill.
He worked closely with Roosevelt to get America into the war against the prevailing isolationist spirit.

After the war he went home. Churchill was out of office, Roosevelt was dead and he didn't have a close relationship with Truman. His personal life was in a bit of a mess after an affair with Churchill's daughter Sarah and he shot himself.

His life is discussed here. Interesting.

I used to enjoy Jane Horrocks as "Bubble" in AbFab, but I fell in love with her as "Gracie".
Apart from anything else I love her unashamed Lancashire accent.
Here she is in great little radio play "Sung". But you often have to be quick with these things as they have a limited time availability.

Do you remember the epic John Ford western "The Searchers"?
This doco delves into the real history of the homesteaders who lived on the edge of the Comanche empire and one family in particular who were probably the source for the movie.
It deals with the Comanche war in general and the fate of captives taken for trade or slaves or wives.
Ironically, the real person who was probably the model for the John Wayne character was a famous Negro captive hunter.
Very interesting.

Archive recordings of war correspondents going back to late 1930s. May be interesting in weeks to come.

PS many of the links in the posts above may now be out of date as the BBC has changed it's podcast download website and file names may have changed. Don't know.

An interview with the very talented British actor Brenda Blethyn. Probably best known for the fragile detective in the series "Vera".
This interview is about 8 years old, about half an hour.

Remember Amanda Vanstone?  Hated her as a minister in the Howard Government.

Any way she is now doing a weekly segment on the ABC Radio National on Monday afternoons.  Counterpoint it's titled.  She does a great job.  Worth a listen.

You should try Philip Adams' Late Night Live too.

Sykes-Picot Agreement: 100 yesterday

The agreement that settled pre- and post-WW1 territorial ambitions of the British & French in the ME. This is a good potted history.

One of the things that endears me to the English is the eccentricities, such as those of Sykes' father. As you will hear, his passions in life were Church architecture, milk pudding and maintaining a constant body temperature.

Thanks for the link. It is a great overview.

During WW1, German agents were at work throughout the area, trying to ferment a Holy War against Britain and France. The most famous was Wilhem Wassmuss who was so much like TE Lawrence that it isn't funny. He had been German Consul at Busherh on the Persian Gulf before the war.

Various different German codes were obtained by the British and used in ways that did not make their possession immeditely known to the Germans. At Behebhan in Persia, Wassmuss's baggage was captured including the diplomatic code book. Thus, when Zimmermann, by coded telegram, invited Mexico to invade Texas, the British alerted the Americans, bringing them into the war. It is stunning that the Germans never put 2 and 2 together, after Wassmuss's baggage was in British hands.

This is an ABSOLUTE gem. But only if you like PG Wodehouse, which I guess is an acquired taste.

But in this short series, called Uncle Dynamite, you can enjoy the talents of Richard Briers (of too much to mention) as the Uncle, Hugh Grant (ditto and of the back seat with a hooker) as Pongo Twistleton and Paul Eddington (of Yes Minister) as the narrator.

Go to radioechoes.com/comedy and scan down till you find P G Wodehouse

BBC Podcasts is now giving listeners a choice between 64 & 128 bit downloads.
It involves a few more clicks but then if you have limited data it can make a difference.

This is more than worth a listen. It should probably be compulsory listening for all secondary students and anyone who uses facebook, twitter etc.
Only available till 17/2/17 I think.

I find stories about survival at sea or shipwrecks fascinating.
This is the story of the clipper Strathmore which was wrecked in 1875 on the Crozet Islands, told from survivors diaries.

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/hindsight/tell-me-a-shipwreck/31217...

(Incidentally, this is from a long running program the ABC dropped last year. Why?)

A half-hour doco on Lenin's trip back to Russia & also his take over of power.
Somehow I'd always thought he sped across German occupied territory to the Russian border in a sealed express train, but the truth is not that simple.

You're such a push-over, Bogey.

A couple of lines of poetry and you're any woman's sex object for the night.

Did you listen to that program. I'm surprised it's still available.

Oral history is great. From ABC archives:

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/hindsight/a-valley-lost---leaving-t...

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/hindsight/a-valley-lost---building-...

According to this the people who lost their land didn't get compensation???

We've had the Six Day War. There were Hitler's various blitzkriegs. And of course Buonaparte had some startling military victories.
But even so, this battle that occurred 602 years ago was pretty amazing for the scale of the victory.

And it was fought over some of the same ground as the trench warfare of WW1. It is a recorded fact that there were instances of WW1 soldiers seeing visions (?) of medieval bowmen as they huddled in the trenches.

This was a revelation to me, not so much about Hitler, but about how it affected the German army and the people. It seems to have been a revelation to the Nazi era historians as well.

http://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/conversations/conversations-norman-ohler/85...

German chemists manufactured drugs like heroine, cocaine & meth-amphetamine long before the war. They were widely prescribed and used in the general public.
But Hitler was a case. He had the one personal doctor through 1936-45 who injected him with a cocktail of everything but especially meth-amphetamine, so he was spaced out most of the time from incredible highs to lows.

But the interesting things you'll hear about on this podcast is how, during the blitzkriegs of Poland, the low countries and France, the Wehrmacht were on a regular daily dose of meth-amphetamine to keep them awake for days on end. This had the opposing forces totally surprised because the German armoured divisions just weren't sleeping.

Very interesting.

This is a very interesting interview about possibly 8 serial killings in England, most of which the police chose not to investigate.
A TV doco is due out in the near future and possibly a movie will follow.

Lasseter's Reef. Does it exist? Will anyone ever stumble across it?

An entertaining discussion on an ill-fated Depression-era expedition to find it . . .if it ever existed.

Heard this a while back, anyone who believes Lasseters reef exists is odd.

In a time of universal deceit — telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)

When I was a young lad and never been kissed (lie no 1), and worked in offices, it was all open plan, except for the high, the mighty and the exalted.
One thing though, there was no "hot desking".

You can listen to this:

Or you can look at the entertaining picture:

PS While you're at it, you might want to listen to this -

I'm going to later. Should be a giggle.

Jimmy Webb - remember him?
Wichita Lineman, By the time I get to Phoenix, and of course Macarthur Park, as well as 4-500 other songs a lot of them he doesn't remember now.
He's 70 now and has interesting memories. Here's an interview done earlier this year for that wonderful ABC RN program Conversations.
http://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/conversations/conversations-jimmy-webb-rpt/...

And one of the best parts is the interviewer, I didn't catch her name, but I do prefer women's voices. She's going to be permanent part-time on the program. Hip Hip!
