An eyewitness account of the revolutionary year in Petrograd, 1917.
Fascinating.

A half-hour doco on Lenin's trip back to Russia & also his take over of power.
Somehow I'd always thought he sped across German occupied territory to the Russian border in a sealed express train, but the truth is not that simple.

I admit to being wrong here. I previously had a strong dislike of Jane Caro, not because of her feminism but because she is such a strident critic of everything non-left.
But I didn't realise she was an author and in particular of a book on Elizabeth I, who is something of a feminist icon herself. And not only an author but a beautifully sensitive reciter of Elizabethan poetry.
Now I'm an admirer.

You're such a push-over, Bogey.

A couple of lines of poetry and you're any woman's sex object for the night.

I am Herb, I'm an incurable romantic for all my hardline politics.

Did you listen to that program. I'm surprised it's still available.

This will interest film buffs.

Oral history is great. From ABC archives:

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/hindsight/a-valley-lost---leaving-t...

http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/hindsight/a-valley-lost---building-...

According to this the people who lost their land didn't get compensation???

We've had the Six Day War. There were Hitler's various blitzkriegs. And of course Buonaparte had some startling military victories.
But even so, this battle that occurred 602 years ago was pretty amazing for the scale of the victory.

And it was fought over some of the same ground as the trench warfare of WW1. It is a recorded fact that there were instances of WW1 soldiers seeing visions (?) of medieval bowmen as they huddled in the trenches.

This was a revelation to me, not so much about Hitler, but about how it affected the German army and the people. It seems to have been a revelation to the Nazi era historians as well.

http://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/conversations/conversations-norman-ohler/85...

German chemists manufactured drugs like heroine, cocaine & meth-amphetamine long before the war. They were widely prescribed and used in the general public.
But Hitler was a case. He had the one personal doctor through 1936-45 who injected him with a cocktail of everything but especially meth-amphetamine, so he was spaced out most of the time from incredible highs to lows.

But the interesting things you'll hear about on this podcast is how, during the blitzkriegs of Poland, the low countries and France, the Wehrmacht were on a regular daily dose of meth-amphetamine to keep them awake for days on end. This had the opposing forces totally surprised because the German armoured divisions just weren't sleeping.

Very interesting.

This is a very interesting interview about possibly 8 serial killings in England, most of which the police chose not to investigate.
A TV doco is due out in the near future and possibly a movie will follow.

Lasseter's Reef. Does it exist? Will anyone ever stumble across it?

An entertaining discussion on an ill-fated Depression-era expedition to find it . . .if it ever existed.

Heard this a while back, anyone who believes Lasseters reef exists is odd.

In a time of universal deceit — telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)

When I was a young lad and never been kissed (lie no 1), and worked in offices, it was all open plan, except for the high, the mighty and the exalted.
One thing though, there was no "hot desking".

You can listen to this:

Or you can look at the entertaining picture:

PS While you're at it, you might want to listen to this -

I'm going to later. Should be a giggle.

Jimmy Webb - remember him?
Wichita Lineman, By the time I get to Phoenix, and of course Macarthur Park, as well as 4-500 other songs a lot of them he doesn't remember now.
He's 70 now and has interesting memories. Here's an interview done earlier this year for that wonderful ABC RN program Conversations.
http://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/conversations/conversations-jimmy-webb-rpt/...

And one of the best parts is the interviewer, I didn't catch her name, but I do prefer women's voices. She's going to be permanent part-time on the program. Hip Hip!
