Cleaning chain saws

If you don't have an air compressor, which I don't, how do YOU go about cleaning out the gunk?
I've always just used various brushes and kero . . .but is there a better way?

take it to the repairman, otherwise you're stuck with kero and a brush

Not sure about using it on chainsaws, but boiling hot water can clear away a lot of greasy stuff.

Cheaper to buy an air compressor in no time at all.
I was hoping someone would have some brilliant idea that had never occurred to me.

So are you saying you get a bucket of boiling water and splash on the exposed sprocket area of your chainsaw?
I can see it would clear the gunk but what might it get into?
