A chemical’s toxicity can be measured in two basic ways: (1) chronic toxicity and (2) acute toxicity. Chronic toxicity refers to the dose of a chemical that, while safe if ingested once, can cause harm if ingested over a long period of time. Acute toxicity, by contrast, refers to the dose of a chemical that, if ingested in one sitting, can cause immediate harm (i.e., poisoning).

In the case of fluoride, early symptoms of acute fluoride poisoning include gastric pain, nausea, vomiting, and headaches. Studies have found that these symptoms are produced by a single ingestion of just 0.1 to 0.3 mg/kg (i.e., 0.1 to 0.3 milligrams of fluoride for every kilogram of bodyweight). A child weighing 10 kilograms, therefore, can suffer symptoms of acute toxicity by ingesting just 1 to 3 milligrams of fluoride in a single sitting. As demonstrated here, 1 to 3 mgs of fluoride is found in just 1 to 3 grams of toothpaste (less than 3% of the tube) — including toothpaste that is marketed specifically to children with bubble-gum and fruit flavors. Children, as well as adults, can also ingest acutely toxic doses of fluoride from fluoride gels, food fumigated with sulfuryl fluoride, and tap water following an accident in the fluoridation equipment.

STUDIES: MINIMUM DOSE OF FLUORIDE THAT CAUSES ACUTE TOXICITY:

“[A]cute fluoride poisonings have occurred at doses of 0.1 to 0.8 mgF/kg of body weight in the USA… At least seven events of acute fluoride poisoning that are related to the fluoridation of drinking water have formally been reported in the USA… Among these occurrences, the estimated toxic dose was lowest in the 1978 event in New Mexico, which involved children in kindergarten and nursery school with the total amount of fluoride per child of 1.4 to 90 mg, which is calculated to be approximately 0.1 mg F/kg in subjects with a body weight of 15 kg. The estimated minimum toxic doses of fluoride involved 0.21, 0.3, 0.34, 0.5, and 0.8 mg/kg in the other events of acute fluoride poisoning in the list, which are much lower than those reported before… Thienes et al in 1972 reported that the dose of fluoride which induces nausea is 0.12 mg/kg (7.2 mg of fluorine/60 kg of body weight), which is close to the toxic doses estimated in the events of fluoride poisoning in the USA… Kasahara et al estimated the minimum toxic dose of fluoride at about 0.2 mgF/kg. They reported that 60 persons took 10 mg amounts of fluoride and more than 90% of them had symptoms. Asou selected 0.1 mg F/kg as the minimum toxic dose.”

STUDIES: EARLY SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE FLUORIDE TOXICITY:

“Ingested fluoride is transformed in the stomach to hydrofluoric acid, which has a corrosive effect on the epithelial lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Thirst, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea are usual symptoms. Hemorrhage in the gastric mucosa, ulceration, erosions, and edema are common signs.”

The observational study published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health (a specialist journal published by the British Medical Journal group) reported that GP clinics in areas with fluoridated water were nearly twice as likely to report high rates of hypothyroidism compared with clinics in areas without water fluoridation.

While the researchers did not prove fluoride was causing the illness, they said their results should be "substantial cause for public health concern" and should prompt people to be tested for the condition.

But David Coggon, professor of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at University of Southampton, said the study was highly questionable.

"As epidemiological evidence goes, this is about as weak as it gets," he said.

"It is quite possible that the observed association is a consequence of other ways in which the areas with higher fluoride differ from the rest of the country. There are substantially more rigorous epidemiological methods by which the research team could have tested their idea," he said.

A spokesman for the Department of Health in Victoria said: "The addition of fluoride to drinking water supplies is universally supported by all leading health authorities."

In Victoria, 90 per cent of the population has access to fluoridated drinking water supplies

Lead author Professor Stephen Peckham, Centre for Health Service Studies, said: “I think it is concerning for people living in those areas.

“The difference between the West Midlands, which fluoridates, and Manchester, which doesn’t was particularly striking. There were nearly double the number of cases in Manchester.

“Underactive thyroid is a particularly nasty thing to have and it can lead to other long term health problems. I do think councils need to think again about putting fluoride in the water. There are far safer ways to improve dental health.”

In England, around 10 per cent of the population (6 million) live in areas with a naturally or artificially fluoridated water supply of 1 mg fluoride per litre of drinking water.

The researchers compared areas to records from 7935 general practices covering around 95 per cent of the English population in 2012-2013.

Rates of high underactive thyroid were at least 30 per cent more likely in practices located in areas with fluoride levels in excess of 0.3 mg/l.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water in varying amounts, depending on the region and it is also found in certain foods and drinks, including tea and fish. It helps combat tooth decay by making enamel more resistant to bacteria.

But previous studies have found that it inhibits the production of iodine, which is essential for a healthy thyroid.

The thyroid gland, which is found in the neck, regulates the metabolism as well as many other systems in the body.

An underactive thyroid can lead to depression, weight gain, fatigue and aching muscles and affects 15 times more women than men, around 15 in 1,000 women.

The researchers say councils must rethink public health policy to fluoridate the water supply in a bid to protect the nation’s tooth health.

However Public Health England said that previous evidence overwhelmingly showed that fluoride in water was safe.

Dr Sandra White, Director of Dental Public Health at Public Health England, said: “Public Health England regularly reviews the evidence base for water fluoridation.

“The totality of evidence, accumulated over decades of research, tells us that water fluoridation is a safe and effective public health measure, and shows no association with reduced thyroid function.”

Other experts also warned that the study may have been skewed by population bias, a claim denied by the authors.

Prof David Coggon, Professor of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, University of Southampton, said: “It is quite possible that the observed association is a consequence of other ways in which the areas with higher fluoride differ from the rest of the country.

It is then transported, in it’s raw state, to the water treatment plant and slowly bled into the public water supply.

If your community is fluoridated then your water purification plant is also a toxic waste disposal facility for the phosphate fertilizer industry.

What people are drinking is a toxic cocktail of untreated air pollution control scrubber liquor.

The fluoride ion is more toxic than lead and almost as lethal as arsenic. That’s why it is very effective as a rat poison or insecticide
