Greek Music & Lyrics
Feb 8th, 2015 at 2:07pm

The Greeks party like no other, there’s booze but it’s not about the booze, there’s decorations, food, tables and chairs but it’s not about them either, like booze they are accessories which add to the experience.

The main theme is about feeling alive, in that moment, through the many different variations of dance, folk, group and individual, sadly dancing in our modern way of life is becoming non-existent.

If something has dragged you down what better way to climb out of the slump than to have some booze in moderation coupled with fine food, a cheerful atmosphere and plenty of dancing.

Remember that feeling in your youth but it doesn’t matter about age if you’re in that environment it just makes you glad to be alive and drop all your inhibitions.

Sometimes dancing to songs about life and everything it encompasses can be very therapeutic, almost as good as getting everything of your chest by talking to a friend.

This doctor recommends all the above for physical and mental well being.

song: Ζορμπάς - (Zorba)

Live Show: στην υγειά μας - stin egia mas

There are too many types of Greek dancing to go through here but generally,

1.  Folk and group dancing follows a dance step and depending upon your age or how young your heart feels you may add extra steps that show your virility, nubility, youth and physical conditioning. As the song approaches its finale if it gets faster and faster you have a feeling of flying around the dance floor or leaping out of your skin.

2. Individual dances do have basic dance steps that you can build on but they are mainly danced to your emotional state as the music runs through your veins rather than a set of steps in unison with the music.

Song:         Βρέχει φωτιά στην στράτα μου - (Vrehei fotia sti strata mou)

Singer:        Γιώτα Νέγκα - (Giota Nega)

Live Show: Στήν υγειά μας - (Stin Egia Mas)

It’s raining fire on my path,             Vrehei fotia sti strata mou

It’s raining fire on my path,                 Vrehei fotia sti strata mou
fire that has consumed me.                fotia pou m’ ehei kapsei
For my impoverished youth                gia ta ftoha ta niata mou
no one will shed a tear.                      kanenas de tha klapsei

Life, life ends here!                              I zoi, i zoi edo teleionei
My candle is being extinguished         svinei to kantili mou
and the soul, the soul like a swallow,   ki i psihi, i psihi san helidoni
takes flight from my lips                       fevgei ap’ ta heili mou

Bitter waves under my prow                Kima pikro stin plori mou
and the sails ripped                              kai ta pania skismena
Not even a brother my boy                   oute adelfos agori mou
ever cared for you at all.                       de noiastike gia sena

Singer:        Ειρήνη Τουμπάκη - (Irini Toumbaki)

Live Show: Στήν υγειά μας - (Stin Egia Mas)

Bring me a cup with wine                            Ferte mia koupa me krasi

Bring me a cup with wine                               Ferte mia koupa me krasi
and keep me company                                   kai kante moy parea,
for me tonight this evening                             gia mena apopse i vradia
is the last                                                        einai i teleftaia.

Hey life you’re dripping poison                        Bre zoi farmakia stazeis,
I’ve had enough                                              se varethika.
and if you offer up golden palaces                 Ki an hrysa palatia tazeis,
their fake                                                        einai pseftika.

Sing sad songs                                              Peste tragoudia thlibera
from the depths of the heart                          ap’ tis kardias ta vathi,
there are no burdens heavier                        den einai alla pio varia
than my life’s misfortunes                              ap’ ta dika mou pathi.

Hey life you’re dripping poison                      Bre zoi farmakia stazeis,
I’ve had enough                                            se varethika.
and if you offer up golden palaces                Ki an hrysa palatia tazeis,
their fake                                                       einai pseftika.

And friends if somewhere you see               Ki an deite, filoi, kapote
a grieving mother                                         mia mana pikrameni,
tell her to be resolute                                   peste as to parei apofasi
and not to wait for me                                  ki as mi me perimenei.

Hey life you’re dripping poison                     Bre zoi farmakia stazeis,
I’ve had enough                                           se varethika.
and if you offer up golden palaces               Ki an hrysa palatia tazeis,
their fake                                                     einai pseftika.

Hey life you’re dripping poison                    Bre zoi farmakia stazeis,
I’ve had enough                                          se varethika.

Song:           Στην αλάνα - (Stin Alana) - In the yard

Singer:        Πεγκυ Ζηνα - (Peggy Zina)

Live Show: Στήν υγειά μας - (Stin Egia Mas)

In the yard                                                                                                    Stin alana

They stood you in a corner, you were a young palikari,                               S’estisan se mia gonia, ki isouna neo palikari
They stood you in a corner, they were four soldiers.                                    S’estisan se mia gonia, ki itane tesseri fandari
They stood you in a corner, they took aim at your heart,                              S’estisan se mia gonia, kai simadevan tin kardia sou
They stood you in a corner, it was a morning with a frost.                            S’estisan se mia gonia, ki itan proi kai pagonia.

Life was waiting for you, so was a long-suffering mother,                           Se karterouse i zoi kai mia paradouleftra mana
and you turned, that morning, into a red lily in the yard.                              Ki egines kino to proi kokkino krino stin Alana.

They stood you in a corner, and your fate was weeping beside you.          S’estisan se mia gonia, ki eklege i mira sou pareki
They stood you in a corner, and Haros too had a gun.                                S’estisan se mia gonia, ki ixe o Xarondas doufeki
They stood you in a corner, you were looking at them smiling,                   S’estisan se mia gonia, kai tous kitouses kai gelouses

Life was waiting for you, so was a long-suffering mother,                           Se karterouse i zoi kai mia paradouleftra mana
and you turned, that morning, into a red lily in the yard.                              Ki egines kino to proi kokkino krino stin Alana.

Song: Παλιόκαιρος - Paliokeros  - (Foul weather)

Singer: Aκης Δείξιμος - Akis Diximos

Live Show: Στήν υγειά μας - (Stin Egia Mas = cheers)

Foul weather                       Paliokeros

I don’t have reserves            den eho perithoria
My limits tapered                stenepsane ta oria
Without a heart                    horis kardia
I don’t want to wander            den thelo na girizo

Slowly slowly we’re dieing      siga siga pethenoume
Always at a status quo            sta idia panda menoume
I deserve a better life            ma mia zoi kaliteri axizo

Apologies and other sacrifices      signomes kea la thimata
Will be taken by the  tzunamis      tha paroun ta kimata
You sink in the hope                    vooliazis stin elpida
That I keep                                pou krato

Slowly slowly I’m destroyed      siga siga dialithika
I’m scared to love again            ton erota fovithika
I’m leaving for a better life              gia mia zoi kaliteri tha pao

You always like to                   pos thes esi gia
Talk about summer                   kalokari na milame

The years we counted            ta hronia pou metrisame
We never lived them            pote mas den ta zisame
With which soul                  me ti psihi
Shall I surrender my soul      psihi tha paradoso

Well what are we waiting for      lipon ti perimenoume
We’re born, we die            geniomaste, pethenoume
You ask and what else            zitas ke eho ti aalo
Can I give you                  na sou doso
