I recently bought a PC, a 2 y/o office-environment dual core 3.0ghz processor, 250g hard drive, 4mg RAM with preloaded Win7 (including keyboard, mouse and dual monitor adapter for $90). I've since loaded Office & Outlook 2007 from discs I already had.

So far it's it's been a gift. I'd a failure on another machine running XP and I haven't got around to fixing it yet.

Prior to this, due to a temporary move, I bought a small Acer laptop pre-installed with Win8, now upgraded. I rarely use the touchscreen or touchpad, preferring a mouse. Though I will admit that this is a handy feature - I can use it on the m/bike when I travel.

I think Win8 was designed with touchscreen controls in mind, seeing as how that seemed to be future with mobile phone technology and Microsoft was counting on familiarity with this system. I think they didn't take into consideration all the old f**rts who have been using XP and PC's for years. Win8 was just too unfamiliar.

I dunno about Win10 - maybe for the laptop. I use it less.

Similar scenario.
ACER, 15.6'', Win8 upgraded to 8.1....
I think you are right about the 'Touchscreen controls', as I've been led to believe that it was designed with the Tablet in mind.

As an OF, just a tad short of 70, I had no real issues with Win8 and even managed to upgrade to 8.1 after a tap on the shoulder from MS. (As mentioned earlier.)
A couple of hours and a little help from Kat on another thread, and I felt I had been using 8.1 for yonks.

Am looking forward to Win10.
If it comes as a free upgrade, as appears to be the case, it will be a bonus.

I think I will skip the upgrade to Windows 10 for quite awhile until after I have read quite a few reviews from people who have been using it for a few months at least.

I have only just changed computers from my Win7 OS to Win8. It has been a nightmare to use, since I can't find the right applications to help fix pop up browsers. Anyone know of any tutorials they have found online that might help me navigate the computer properly?

In regards to the topic, I hope we see a free upgrade for the complete fargarounds we have been having with Win8.

Not totally sure what you mean here, Rocky.
Can't say I've come across the term 'Pop-up Browser'.

Do you mean 'Pop-up Blocker'?

Trying to reply to this message, for example, is very difficult. The loading of the computer is very slow and I have a lot of trouble typing a message. Having hit reply, the new tabs and a new window opened up to annoy my attempt at communication. Something is slowing things down, and I can't find the disk cleanup or the disk defragmenter anywhere. The search bar does nothing to show that it even exists. The last computer I had, did have the same problem that I have now. But that was resolved with those two system tools.

Do you know if the OS has those applications?

It sounds like you have collected malware from somewhere.  Have you run Malwarebytes?

I gave up and started using Chrome. Still runs slow, but I am not having pages loading on my screen that I have to manually shut down. Will try and eliminate the malware later tonight.

I tend to only look at Forums (OzPol and PA) and various News sites.  However, occasionally, I need to Google for "answers" and that is where you can pick up Malware. I use Mozilla/Firefox.  I haven't used IE for a decade or more.

Run Malwarebytes each week. Spybot another free program will find "cookie tracking" things but not much else.

I do all that through Norton.

Tend to go with Nef in that you may have picked up some malware.

Right-click on your drive in File Explorer, then select 'Properties'' (you may have to do this a couple of times, there's
sometimes a bug which sends you to the 'System' page. Just exit and re-try). On the resulting screen, Disk Cleanup
is about 2/3 of the way down, same as XP/Vista/7.

For Disk Defragmenter do the same, and instead of Disk Cleanup click 'Tools' on the tabs at the top. And there's Disk
Defragmenter and CheckDisk.

Then you owe it to yourself to give it another try.

It's changed a lot, and is fast and quite secure.

You'll still need Ad-Block or similar if you hate ads.

My next bit of advice was to 'PM Kat'......

Download AdBlocker.. works great.  It sounds like your hitting the send button is triggering this spam stuff automatically.. rings a bell there.

https://adblockplus.org/

This is for Firefox, which I use - but the home page will give you Explorer etc...

Oh - for your disc utilities go to your charms on the bottom right, select Control Panel, System and Security, Find and Fix Problems, then go to System and Security again - Run maintenance tasks.

Half the trouble I had was with Firefox. I had been using that since the early 2000s, because people recommended it over IE to help ward off hackers. But then the malware came along and I couldn't do a great deal with my old computer, or my new computer. I gave up and used Chrome, and I haven't had any problems. I suppose I can run spybot again, since it didn't do any harm the last time. And it does have a defragmenter/cleanup.

Go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ its a good site in many ways, free malware cleaners and the like.

This http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/ stops malware from running so your antispyware can work on deleting it.

I found that running free Avast allowed or even enhanced popups so I carked it and went back to Trend Micro.

Defrag is still on Windows 8.1, just type defrag in the search box.
