but the vote from the experts is toyota.

last time I checked a comparison, the Patrol actually outperformed the land cruiser

Patrols are good John,  the electronics are a bit complicated, the diesel injectors need a bit more servicing, the plastics under the bonnet a bit more prone to perish.
The 3 litre is underpowered, the 4.2 is a good solid unit.
I would think a patrol may be better value than a cruiser.
Great tow vehicle too,

I don't like Navaras,  and all those other funny cars like x trails which are flimsy

Sprint, just a few things.
The V8 cruisers are very prone to oil lock at the top of the cams , especially if towing
Use really high quality oil and filters and change regularly,
My farm toyotas, I change oil and filters every 5k which is way more than recommended but they are bulletproof if you do this,
Air filters too if its dusty,

The flash extras like traction control on the prados sound great and hey are great , but they lead people to lose their off road skills. It's actually quite tricky using good clutch and gear control and momentum to tackle things rather then technology.
Then one day you hop in a bog standard hilux and you're stuffed,

Dual battery is a must.
DON'T stack too much weighty stuff on the roof of tall vehicles like prados.  They roll.
Remember as soon as you leave the bitumen, you are in peril.
Wet grass, tyres clagged with thick black mud and you'll be heading sideways down a track before you know it.

Air lockers, mud tyres ( I like mickey Thompson) and a good winch and a set of those plastic tracks.
I've had to use beach towels many times to lay under the tyres to get off bits of Fraser when the sand is powdery.

Really if you have a 4b.  , use it,  always something new to learn,

My pet hate....carpeted interiors

.............V8 cruisers are very prone to oil lock at the top of the cams , especially if towing..................
aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh, that'ld not be so good.

..............Use really high quality oil and filters and change regularly...........
yes, i just put nulon 10-40 in my camry. surprising difference.
quieter on startup, revs more freely.

...................Wet grass, tyres clagged with thick black mud and you'll be heading sideways down a track before you know it...........

had not thought of that. I assume the electronic gadgets are of not much use in that scenario ??

its an awful feeling sprint,  no, once you are on mud especially if going sideways , you have no control.
ive actually been able to get someone to jump out and hold the damm thing.

all those traction control systems just cut the power to any tyre that is spinning (in the same way an ABS cuts the braking to any tyre that is NOT spinning).

Not knocking them, they are great , but its easy to get into some sticky terrain using them , that you wouldnt be able to access with out them .

And going back down a steep track is always more nerve racking then going up one.

as a side note a oli filter for a hilux is $9.
for a mercedes deisel 2000 sdi  $190 .

Yes, I'ld be WAY out of my abilities there.
Someone told me, a significant difference between a 4X4 and a normal car is in a normal car you get stuck a few dozen feet from a road.
In a 4X4, you get stuck many miles from a road.

In a 4 x 4 you'd want a diesel at least.

I did look at diesels. Was unconvinced with the Toyota diesels.

the 4.2 TD in the older landcruisers is very good.
With the 5 speed auto or manual.
Those are very expensive. About $50K 2nd hand.

the prado D4D 3L diesel has a few queries over it.
injector seals, glow plugs, injectors. You can get a massive repair bill if unlucky.
It has a timing belt that needs replacing.

the prado V6 4L has an excellent rating. well priced on the 2nd hand market.

the V8 petrol in the landcruiser is a lexus motor.
As mentioned, oil lock in the cams might be an issue.
I had not heard that but it could well be.

petrol are $10-15K  cheaper to buy. Often have had an easier life.

Quote:
............Toyota’s 4.5-litre in-line six and 4.7-litre V8 petrol engines have been pretty well bullet-proof. Unlike Nissan, Toyota discourages LPG conversions on its petrol engines, so any LPG LandCruiser needs to be assessed carefully. Valve seat recession is possible in gas-fuelled engines.

Diesel 100 Series need to have had regular, professional maintenance to ensure reliability. The naturally-aspirated 1HZ engine is a pre-chamber, indirect-injection type that needs oil changes at no more than 5000km intervals. A detailed service history is an essential requirement with a used 100 Series diesel.

Many 1HZ naturally aspirated diesels have been fitted with after-market turbos and these installations give little trouble if the boost and fuel delivery haven’t been too ambitious, and servicing has been regular..............

the petrol uses more fuel.
cheaper to buy, less risky to run.

no, the 3.4 V6's might not be so good.

the 4 litre V6 seems very good.

I did love my GMC in America.
6 liter V8 power. Was really manoeuvrable too.

In UK now I have Volvo XC90 which is pleasant enough but more an SUV.

I get them for the wife, she likes to be higher up for safety.

Different car topic - Oils.

I changed my oil a fe weeks ago, used 'Nulon 10W-40'

Very good. Has silenced the top end start up rattle, much more linear revving from 2500 - 5000 rpm.
Car runs cooler on temp gauge.

That was unexpected.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49kETjPZP9Y

does some dyno testing.
5 different Oils gave from 167 - 179 kw at the wheels in the same car.

Nulon won.

I just bought my wife a Maserati 4WD in Italy, although she thought it was a bit of sh1t compared to her Ferrari we have in France!

We have a Lamborghini one when we are in USA, but it is a bit slow off the mark!

Perhaps Andrei or someone can advise us on what is  chic?

Yours Sincerely

Pajeros are a decent bus and can be had a bit cheaper than the Prados. The DID diesels are good and the V6 is built like a tank but expect 13-17l/100  for the petrol. They are bigger than the Prado but not as big as the Landcruiser.
