Morning all! Farmer Lisa is off to pick the last of our eggplants and capsicums.

Hubby will then clear and dig that area to make room for our Autumn crops.

Have a good one & happy gardening  Smiley

Morning all.

We've been up early this morning checking out our choko vine which we planted a few months back. Lots of little baby chokos are appearing.. about the size of my finger nail.

Anybody here grow chokos?

If not... you should. They're easy to plant and grow AND very nutritional and versatile to prepare for tucker.

I saw them selling for $9/kilo the other day. As a kid, I recall these veges being virtually given away at our local fruit market.

If you would like to know how/where to grow a choko vine, just drop in and ask Smiley

After brekky, the kids and I went to the vege patch for our usual daily treasure hunt.

"They" found a cucumber about 20 cm long, a rockmelon, 2 chokos and some good sized potatoes.

Smiles all round as they felt proud of their efforts.

Then they wanted to play in the dirt and that's when I started screaming for them to get inside real quick ... for a banyor ( Greek word for bath ).

More gardening topics can be found in the Fermentations board. There are threads on chooks, leafcurl, broadbeans and more. Good info.

Fermentations has nothing to do with gardening.

Thanks for dropping by.

See ya.

The kids and I planted broadbeans today.

One of my Greek neighbours who is a very experienced gardener scolded me for planting the beans way too soon. Told me I should have waited for at least another 2 weeks.

Ahh well. We live and learn.

And last night, we had a family birthday celebration during which my Mum also confirmed that broadbeans need to be planted about mid March.

Last year, Mum produced some 20 kilos of broadbeans. There were lots of happy relatives, friends as well as neighbours as a result.

If you plant them in March (as I used to do) then by the time they are bearing the plants are like 1.5metres tall—and subject to damage from winter storms.

Best to plant in June.

I did a comparison planting, two blocks of broadbeans, one planted in March, one in June. Same weight of broadbeans.

Some of my neighbours have been busy planting broadbeans today. So now it's a matter of waiting....to see who has produced the best and the most lol. I like winning these little "competitions".  I'm up againt much older and far more experienced gardeners ..so I like to show that I too can keep up with the best lol.

And...today, we finished planting winter cos lettuce seeds in a few seedling boxes. Last year we produced over 140 lettuces. Wonder if this will happen this year. There are so many family, friends and neighbours waiting eagerly for organic veges. Some of them are getting on a bit so .. yeah, hopefully there'll be a good crop this year.

The kids and I picked 1 more cucumber and 2 handfuls of cherry tomatoes today. Sadly, these yummy veges are now coming to an end.

Getting the kids to pick the veges out of the garden excites them no end...and it helps them to want to eat veges too. They know they're going to have salad for today's lunch, because they've picked out what's going to go in it.

Gardening is a great opportunity to get kids involved in a healthy, fun, learning activity AND to help them to voluntarily eat what is on their plate, without the usual fuss.

Last night, whilst watering our front & back gardens, I noticed that our choko vine had some 30 chokos which are ready to be picked.

Sooooo, the kids and I are going to grab a few baskets and play a treasure hunt game this morning (the treasure being the choko of course).

One thing I love about gardening is that it provides a great incentive for kids to eat all their brekky and jump into their gum boots for a bit of an outdoor adventure.

Gardening also helps us Mums in structuring different types of daily activities for our kids. So, after our treasure hunt game, we'll do some painting.  I might get the kids to paint a choko or something else that's simple. It's always interesting to see how their brains translate real objects onto paper using their eyes and hands.

Actually, I find it quite fascinating.

Anyways... happy gardening!
