18V Drills
Dec 28th, 2014 at 8:23am

Well let get this board kicked off!

I am thinking of upgrading my battery operated drill. I have tried a couple of cheap crap ones over the years but they usually come with bad batteries that dont hold a charge very well and you cant replace them.

I currently have two 18v Dewalts which are reasonably OK except drills tend to slip in the chucks when doing heavy drilling. This may only be due to the chucks they come with but I have wondered if there is a better brand that doesnt do this  ( or a better brand of keyless chuck you can buy)

Also has anyone had any experience with the 36V ones?

Forgive me for not remembering the brands.
There are some fantastic battery powered units that we used on the mines (no tag and test required).
They were better quality ones, I have bought cheap ones at home , never again they just dont last. (China Syndrome)

I've used the Hitachi ones a few times and found them to be brilliant, i was so impressed i was going to steal the one I was using (from my dad, who would have let me steal it if I wanted it  Wink) ... I myself own a Makita, it's ok but it too can slip  ... not sure how the battery performed on the Hitachi though, I didn't use it long enough to find out

Actually I am a great fan of Hitachi, I have had their saws, a router and angle grinder for years. I remember at the time I bought them they all had the most powerful motors of the well known brands. At the time they were real tradesman quality although I now notice they sell two versions of saws (I think it was ?) a cheaper handyman version amd a tradie version.

Must check the drills out

if you can when buying tools, always go for quality over price ... unless it's something you'll only use once or twice, in which case it doesn't matter ..

DeWalt stuff used to be pretty good.

Hilti is another brand worth a look, but not cheap.

I had a bit of a look around the net for Hitachi ones yesterday, Was quite attracted to the 18v brushless ones until I found out the prices, well over $500. Looks like it might have to wait for a while at that rate.

check out your local auction houses .... engineering firms that close down will often auction all their tools ... it won't be new but it'll be cheap

The high end Bosch gear is good - way, way better than their consumer products.

Yep, I've got one of these and it's a great drill for the home handy man.

Hitachi have a good name.

I bought 18v Taurus from Aldi, small 2 speed, adjustable clutch, and the torque is really good. With Aldi returns are pain free.

every now and again Aldi have 24v drills on sale for around $50...

they are a fantastic drill for the money..

they hold charge and if they only last a few years so what?

I have one for our house and have purchased 2 more for the business I work for to use in the 2 depots I work at..

one is at least 3 years old now and the other 2 years..
fricken great drill.. Smiley

..................

the other one I have at home stays in my caravan for winding the legs up and down and engaging the electric caravan moving system.. it's an 18V Ozito lithium batter drill...

under $100 and its a freaking great drill... better than the standard 24v drill

I use this DeWALT drill at work.
It's fantastic.

It comes with a spare battery so you never run out of power in middle of a job:

Im a carpenter by trade and have recently used makita, hitachi, bosch and AEG cordless tools.

I would recommend you look at AEG or Milwalkee as they have 6 and 5 years warranties on their drills and three years on their batteries.

Makita and hitachi only have 3 years and  1 on their batteries.

Hitachi used to be fantastic but their quality has fallen away recently.
