Huge changes on the totem pole very soon

Economy-wise.

Big changes. The whole dynamic is soon to become quite different than it is today.

Unfortunately, due to the shortsighted stupidity of Australia's successive leaders, this country seems destined to continue being little more than a minerals commodity quarry for the rest of the world's industrial nations.

We don't need lawyers as politicians ~ we need top-grade economists running government policy.

A little back ground on the Daily Mail

Quote:
The Mail has traditionally been a supporter of the Conservatives and has endorsed this party in all recent general elections.

The paper is generally critical of the BBC, which it says is biased to the left.

The article itself is completely meaningless biased drivel. It is based solely on forecasts by economists which are notoriously inaccurate. (in 1990 they forecast that within 20 years Brisbane would be bigger than Melbourne. In 2012 they forecast that there was no end in sight for the resources boom).

Even the central claim that the economy of the UK has overtaken "socialist" France is wrong.

Quote:
The growth in Britain’s national accounts was aided by the decision of the Office for National Statistics to include earnings from the previously uncharted economy of drugs and the sex trade. The French figures do not yet include these industries.

And then there is this gem

Quote:
And the analysis also claims that within the next two decades, Germany, held back by a declining population and the weakness of the euro, could be overtaken by the UK for the first time since 1954.

So the UK will overtake Germany due to it's growing population.
A population that's growing due to IMMIGRATION.

What? like the economists for hire in the US that helped push the banking agenda of no regulation ....

who were paid to give glowing credit ratings for countries like Iceland etc. ......which went down the tubes during the GFC.

The same corrupt economists that still advise the Obama govt?

Economists are nearly as bent as our Politicians ...

the choices are becoming slimmer.  Roll Eyes

Over to you, Gonads - tell us the rest of the woeful tale.

What sort of professionals do you think would be best for running a democracy like ours?

University academics?

Environmentalists?

Bogans?

CHAFTA is going to have a massive influence on our economy.
Whether, as Dickens once asked, we shall turn out to be the heroes of our own story or not, is another question.

One area in which it will have a huge effect is the university sector and education in general. We are likely to get an influx of Chinese students - fee-paying of course - way beyond anything we have seen before.
Not only will this directly top up the coffers of the unis and lessen the liability of Australian governments, it is going to open up possibilities of research partnerships hitherto undreamed of. Australia has a reputation in research way beyond its size and the Chinese will be more than willing to share our expertise.

And I haven't even touched on the possibilities in agriculture.

... or will give the money-hungry politicians with their insatiable appetites the idea that all courses should be full fee for all 'equally' ....

Whenever there is a dollar in it, politicians will find a way to increase costs and thus wages and continue the death spiral.....

was watching something a few days ago about world populations ... expected to grow from the current 7 billion to between 10 & 11 billion in the next 50 yrs ...and most of it in Asia and Africa ... Australia is in a great position to benefit from this if we can get our act together.

To the extent we don't get our act together in food production, others will by one means or another.

Needless to say, Australia is already well on its way to becoming a tenant to offshore landlords within its own borders.

Same thing happened in the UK when the Indians and Pakistanis arrived. Overnight almost every residential property was owned by one of these nationals, with British tenants paying off their mortgages.

Same thing is happening here of course. Greeks, Italians, Indians, and overseas Chinese will own 90% of rental properties within the next 20 years or less.

So do I.

It cost the UK government a sh*tload of money to help Germany bail them out of their own self-inflicted bankruptcy.

Unionism in Greece is what caused their financial crash. And to think they used to tease me 40 years ago that Australian industry will one day be ruined by immigrant Pommy shop stewards ...

And from no Greek union delegates here in Australia - I finished my days in the manufacturing industries with almost every union delegate being a strutting little self-important Greek bantam cock thinking the sun shone out of his arse.

Hypocrites in spades.

That's not to say I don't admire the Greeks for their many good qualities ~ and their women are wonderful.
