Review Of Workplace Laws Seen As Attack

Productivity Commission Review of workplace laws seen as attack on hard-won conditions

Date
    December 19, 2014
    Sydney Morning Herald

Unemployment and job creation, pay rates and the interests of small business will be included in the framework for a sweeping review of national workplace laws.      Huh

The Federal Government on Friday released its terms of reference for the Australian Productivity Commission review of the Fair Work Act.

The terms are broad enough to consider a range of arrangements including penalty rates.

Employment Minister Eric Abetz said the inquiry into the five-year-old Fair Work Act would ensure it was still meeting its objectives and "contributing to productive, rewarding, competitive and harmonious workplaces".

The terms of reference for the inquiry include job creation, the needs of small business, productivity, competitiveness, business investment, and fair and equitable conditions for employees.

He said the Productivity Commission will be asked to make recommendations about how the laws can be improved both to ensure that workers were protected and businesses could prosper.

The government would seek a mandate for any changes recommended when seeking re-election. He said it was in the national interest to ensure Fair Work laws are "balanced and effective".

"Higher living standards, better pay and more jobs all depend on having fair, productive and effective workplaces," Mr Abetz said.

Australian Council of Trade Unions Secretary, Dave Oliver, said that launching an attack on wages and conditions including holiday penalty rates, on the Friday afternoon before Christmas, was "an absolute disgrace".      Sad

"The message from Australian unions is clear: penalty rates, wages, conditions, safety and rights at work are not up for grabs," he said.

"The terms of reference revealed today put the whole workplace system on trial – pay and conditions, rights at work, collective bargaining and unfair dismissal are all on trial by the Productivity Commission.      Sad

"Union-won conditions are a fundamental pillar of the decent living standards that Australians want protected and we are not going to sit back while the Abbott Government does the bidding of big business and tries to attack them."

Government’s stealth attack on workers a week before Christmas
19 December, 2014 | Media Release

The Abbott Government has shown its true colours – at a time when they hope no one is looking – by announcing a wholesale review of Australia’s workplace laws that will see wages, conditions and rights at work slashed.

ACTU Secretary Dave Oliver said that going after wages and conditions on the Friday afternoon before Christmas is an absolute disgrace.

“The Government knows that Australians don’t trust them and they know the community won’t support any attempt to cut wages, cut conditions and cut rights at work,” Mr Oliver said.

“That’s why they’ve announced the terms of reference for the productivity commission review into the Fair Work Act today.

“The irony should not be lost on anyone that the Abbott Government has done this at a time when millions of workers around the country will be relying on penalty rates as they work on public holidays such as Christmas Day and New Years Day.”

Mr Oliver said that Australian workers were experiencing the equal lowest wage growth in the 17 year history of the wage price index, productivity growth has been extremely strong and workers’ share of the pie is lower than it has been.

“Despite what the Government’s ideological agenda would have you believe, these are the facts.

“The Government is deliberately choosing to take the low road of attacking wages and conditions instead of the high road of investment in skills, infrastructure and innovation."

“The message from Australian Unions is clear: penalty rates, wages, conditions, safety and rights at work are not up for grabs.

"Union-won conditions are a fundamental pillar of the decent living standards that Australians want protected and we are not going to sit back while the Abbott Government does the bidding of big business and tries to attack them.

“The terms of reference revealed today put the whole workplace system on trial – pay and conditions, rights at work, collective bargaining and unfair dismissal are all on trial by the Productivity Commission."

Mr Oliver said that workers need to understand the scope of this review, because its outcomes will have a direct impact on them.

“The last time the Coalition were in Government they put in WorkChoices, the most radical change to our industrial relations system in 100 years,” Mr Oliver said.

“This time, despite all their promises, the Coalition clearly intend to try once more to slash wages, conditions and rights at work.

“The Government has put its public view that Australian wages and conditions are too high and too generous, and they have blamed workers for the loss of jobs going overseas.

“Given the sensitivity about these issues, the Government would only be asking for such a comprehensive review if they were determined to make radical change.

“The Productivity Commission review will be the platform by which the Government can change the laws that protect Australian workers and make it easier for business to cut take home pay."

WorkChoices with reduced conditions and no guarantees of conditions and pay rates by any other name.

Someone asked - longie I think - why there was a need for a national strike.... well... there it is.

Not even the greatest lie of this pack of liars so far since everyone expected it - now many are asking themselves why they were so foolish as to vote for these clowns.

For the record.. I voted for not major party.

ADDS:-  Tony IS aware that his salary and those of every other fattened cat also incorporate a considerable payment for working unusual hours etc - even when they don't even begin to do so - and any reduction will also need to be made on salaries....????????

Where's Andrei to tell us all what a great deal we'll be getting and what a great boost it will be for jobs (none at all), and how the economy will be 'freed up'.... Grin.. just a few of the parrot phrases to fill the gaps in realities and truth...

The most telling part of this "review" is what is not included. 457 visas, skills, training, etc.

especially since it is an ENQUIRY, not proposed legislation.

funniest thing is listening to the dole-bludging IMFULLOFIT go on about 'workers' rights, as if he even knows what it is to work!

As Abbotts recession looms large in 2015 all Abbott can think to do is bash hard working Australians.

The question is.."How long will it take to fix the damage done to the economy and Australias reputation by Tony Abbott after we kick him out in 2016?"

I don't see any suggestion that they will suggest expanding workers rights, increase penalty rates recommend wage increases or higher superannuation etc.

All the focus is on the pretence of improved productivity, reduced conditions removal or reduction of penalties, overtime, reduced take home pay etc.

Bloody oath it is an attack.

At least a generation.

Probably two.

Even longer if the bastards conspire to get back into power in that time.

why is 'improving productivity' such a problem for you?  don't you realise that the only way you get real increases in wages is via increased productivity?  not to mention less unemployment and greater national wealth.

our lowest unemployment was under workchoices as well as the highest increase in real wages in over a decade.

what a horrible state to be in!  image higher wages and more jobs!!  we must resist that so we can keep the right to a 15min smoko.

how dumb can you get?
