Thousands Of Protesters Rally Against ABC Cuts

Thousands of Sydney protesters rally against ABC funding cuts
By Mandie Sami, staff

Sat 22 Nov 2014.
ABC News.

Thousands of people have gathered at Sydney's Town Hall to protest against government funding cuts to Australia's public broadcasters.   Smiley

It is one in a series of public demonstrations scheduled to take place across the country in response to the Federal Government's decision to cut $50 million a year from the ABC's budget over the next five years.

The rally in Sydney was attended by thousands, including Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek, Greens Senator Scott Ludlam and the ABC's Quentin Dempster.
ABC supporters protest against cuts in Sydney.  Sydney protesters angered by the Government's announced cuts chanted: 'No ifs, no buts, no ABC cuts!'.

"We are not alone because this is happening in every city ... people are organising to challenge and confront, and ultimately defeat, the people who brought us these cuts," Senator Ludlam said at the protest.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull revealed this week that $254 million would be cut from the ABC's federal funding over the five-year period.

There will be significant job losses at the ABC in the wake of the budget cut, the national broadcaster's chief executive Mark Scott has confirmed.   Sad

Mr Scott said he will detail the number of redundancies during an all-staff address on Monday.

The Government said the ABC should be able to find savings by implementing efficiencies.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said the cuts were part of an agenda to undermine the public broadcaster.   Sad

"This is a clear case that Tony Abbott is going after his political critics because he just doesn't like people who disagree with Tony Abbott's narrow view of the world," Mr Shorten said.

I watched Turnbull squirming around trying to intimate that Abbott didn't make the now 'infamous' no cuts statement.

Even I felt embarrassed for him.

Absolutely disgusting.

Stop the
BULLSHIT
, Quentin Dempster tells
Malcolm Turnbull

November 22, 2014 - 6:04PM

...

Several hundred people filled Town Hall Square on Saturday to protest at the $254 million cuts and a forecast 400 job losses at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, with prominent journalist Quentin Dempster describing Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull as "a bullshitter".

They chanted "No ifs, No buts. No ABC Cuts" and waved banners reminding Prime Minister Tony Abbott of his election-eve pledge of no cuts to the ABC or SBS.

Michael Tull, National President of the Community and Public Sector Union, said the purpose of the rally, which heads to Melbourne on Sunday and Canberra on Monday, was to make the promise stick.

Presenter and ABC journalist Quentin Dempster said Lateline had been gutted of its reporting strength and was reportedly to be made "lighter".

"To make it lighter in an age of geopolitical tensions, terror, corruption and inhumanity is laughable," he said.

Increasing advertising from five to ten minutes an hour on SBS would further dislocate audience loyalty and was a destructive dynamic that could only erode taxpayer support for SBS over time, he said.

In an age of fear and terror Australia needed SBS as a countermeasure, he said, emphasising its importance for: "Delivering a sense of inclusion through multilingual services to our rapidly increasing migrant population including this country's 600,000 Muslims."

He went on: "Tony Abbott said unequivocally and unconditionally 'No cuts to the ABC or SBS'."

He described
Malcolm Turnbull
as
"a bullshitter"
because of statements he had made defending Tony Abbott's election comments that there would be no cuts to the ABC.

I did feel sympathy for Mal, early in the piece, but then he appeared to shove all his principles under the cushion and firmly sit on them.

All sympathy now 'out the window'.

Good, good, good,  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Im very happy that these meagre cuts are going to be made, In reality it doesnt go nearly far enough for me, anyhow I still think abbott is still fearful of the left media, despite this

But if it upsets the left, IM ON BOARD,  Wink

I have no sympathy for these people, If those who control the ABC want to make it an australian version of the old soviet media outlet THE PRAVADA, THEN THEY GOT IT COMING.

Sympathy for the ABC ???, hell i cant dig deep and find any sympathy for SUCH LEFT BASED SCUM that is funded by many taxpayers who dont believe in the leftie horse**** they preach..

If the leftards are to believed, then Abbott is at worst a wall basher, given the allegation is that he punched a wall, not a woman. Gawd, they can't even get THAT right!  Grin Grin Grin
