Without doubt one of the worst paintings
Nov 12th, 2014 at 11:11am

...  I've ever seen of Comrade Gough.

It bears only a vague resemblance to him. One can only guess that someone fetched it up on an impulse from the store-room beneath the Sydney Town Hall where the failed Archibald Prize paintings are kept.

Herbie, bringing you the issues that matter, on the hour every hour

In a time of universal deceit — telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

No evidence whatsoever it can be attributed to George Orwell or Eric Arthur Blair (in fact the same guy)

It looks good to me, but if you dislike it that much Herbie you could always find out where the photo was taken and move the candle a little closer.

A bit silly to toss it out though. It might be worth something in a few years.

And then some wanna-be 'artist' forgot to give Marxist-Leninist Hero Gough Whitlamovich a red tie.

That would have got him shot during the Stalin era.

Or sent to the Gulag.

Ah, but this Whitlam was a liberal. He used to belong to the liberal party, didn't he, before jumping ship to the ALP? Maybe this artist's just remembering the good ole days.

I think you need some closure on this Herb.  It's too late to throw rocks at Gough's coffin but then you could always desecrate his grave.

I hate to bring it up at such a time of heightened  anxiety for you,  but I did see the great man speak at the Bankstown Civic Centre in 1972.  A very brilliant orator, and it was true that when Gough spoke you could've virtually heard a pin drop in the audience.

Umm...well, admittedly it was all in Russian and the entire audience were KGB spies -- those that weren't home under the bed (if that helps).

He had speech writers ....

dear O dear O dear.

And you could have heard a pin drop because everyone was hanging out to hear what extravagant promises the Great Man had in store for them.

Promises ...

Have you ever been to a Bingo Hall that was crammed full of Pathetic Old Farts waiting for the next numbers to be read out ... and you could hear a pin drop because some pathetic prize was waiting for the winner?

I won a Viagra and a well past its Use By Date condom in a brown envelop once, but no luck since then.  Tongue

Poor fellow indeed, Aussie.

It's a 40 degree day in Sydney today, and it occurred to me that in 30 years time there's going to be a hell of a peak in the incidence of death by skin cancer.

I'm thinking especially of all those thousands of 20-something year olds who are now building all those new villa houses on vacated quarter acre blocks.

I see them sweating away with their bricklaying and their nail-guns working in the blazing heat.

The lucky ones will be the Pacific Islanders and the other naturally tanned fellows.

But an awful lot of Caucasian types will start seeing skin specialists in 30 years time.

Personally I'm lucky because I've got ethnic skin from my French and Portuguese ancestors, but my brother wasn't so lucky.

He inherited his genes from the Scottish, English, and German side of the family. Had melanoma starting to eat away at his face. A real shocker.

Hate to be pedantic but oratory is public speaking -- Oh, maybe he was lip syncing.  I always wondered what that guy behind the curtains was doing -- another one of them Reds I reckon.

Indeed it is, but in days of yore the great orators wrote their own speeches. The Ancient Greeks and others.

Nowadays you buy a speech like you order a pizza.

"Have it on my desk by noon, and I'll settle the account with you on Friday".

dear O dear O dear ... and Christ wept for His people.

It's plagiarism, pure and simple.

The world is full of actors earning a good living from reciting other people's scripts.

I dunno Herb, Demosthenes who was one of the Greek's best known orators actually plagiarized a  lot of his speeches from the  philosophies of Thucydides.
