They're operating in Perth, but the word is that they're doing so unlawfully.
It is very cloudy. I dunno about WA, but here in Queensland, Uber has been told by Government to 'cease and desist' their operations and infringement notices have been issued against them.
Here are my basic overheads for each Cab I operate:
Rego = $7159.00 pa.
Taxi security levy = $368.80 pa.
Comprehensive Insurance and Driver disablilty cover = (About) $6500.00 pa.
Licence renewal = $160.00 pa.
Cost to link to the local booking and despatch Company (eg Yellow Cabs) = $13,200.00 pa.
Vehicle = must be replaced after 6 years from compliance plate date.
Vehicle Inspection by Government every six months = $140.00.
Total = $27527.80 pa.
Value of Licence here on the Sunshine Coast = $500,000.00.
Uber?
Zero Government cost to Operator who can pick you up in any old beat up piece of crap, you have absolutely no protection, any weirdo could turn up to pick you up, unlike with Cabs, no-one will have a clue what happened to you if you disappear, you lose something in the vehicle - forget it, no requirement that the vehicle meets any standard whatsoever, no vehicle inspection by Government, you will share the vehicle with anyone else who is going your way, zero security unlike with Cabs which have compulsory in vehicle cameras always operating - you and the Cabbie are under constant visual camera surveillance, soon, in Queensland, everything even said within the Cab will be recorded by Government.
Sure, Uber is illegal and it is also unsafe.
Potentially, it also might destroy the lives of hundreds of thousands of honest family men Cabbies, and of course, their families.
It has not yet popped up here on the Sunshine Coast, and if it does, if I were a Uber driver, I doubt there would be four inflated tyres when you needed them.
