Saving Private Ryan's on tonight.
Oct 22nd, 2014 at 1:25pm

I saw it once.

No need to see it again.

I don't know how much they paid to make this film, but I think the budget for promoting it must have been 10 times more.

I was mildly entertained. No surprises. Quickly forgettable.

I had a part time job once as a projectionist at a defence run cinema.   There were two projectors and you had to watch carefully for the sign to start each one and change shutters to ensure seamless transfer between each 20 minute reel.   I remember being up in the projection room watching the 1st reel of this movie - and i was just overwhelmed by the brutalness and absolute in your face war scenes that I missed the timing marks all together!    I t certainly was an eye opener!

From the opening scene of all the stars of David on the tombstones to all  the Hebrew names you hear throughog thd movie, you'd think the Jews defeated the Axis single-handedly. More Zionist propaganda from Steven Jewberg.

I could imagine that.

But if war movies were not my thing, I'ld not bother to see it.

I distinctly remember looking around to try to get out of the cinema when the rattling clanking heavy roaring noises of the tanks arriving started getting louder.

I wanted outta there.

Who wouldn't ?

Er... why start  thread on it then?

Definitely see it.

It's just that I get a bit pissed off when the publicity machine promises me the cinematic experience of a life-time, but then it's all downhill when you actually see it.

But these things are very subjective, so don't be influenced by me.

And as someone from the 50's when there were actors of real merit and depth to their character and screen persona, it pisses me off greatly to watch very 'B'-Grade actors like Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, and a whole host of others being touted as 'Stars' instead of the very shallow tradesmen that they are.

I won't be watching 'Ryan' for a second time, unlike movies such as link which I never tire of watching again and again.

It's a great movie. Best anti-war war movie I have seen. At least, the best one since Full Metal Jacket.

The first third of Saving Private Ryan is excellent and intense simulation of combat.  The second third is the typical Hollywood attempt at trying to show the traditional tensions they imagine exist within a fighting unit.  The last third is a Hollywood caricature of battle.  It's as if they've been reading too many war comics and decided to put it on screen.

Personally, I wouldn't bother.   If you want an excellent war movie and one which doesn't fall into the usual tropes that Hollywood relies on, I can recommend several.

"Theirs is the Glory" - made by the survivors of the battle of Arnhem in 1945, just after the war ended, in and around Arnhem, it is an excellent recreation of that battle.  No over the top heroism, just the sort of gritty determination that is needed when you're being besieged.

"Go tell the Spartans" - a telling portrayal of the futility of the Vietnam War, made on a low budget and without the spectacular special effects, it tells the story of one village and it's fight against the Viet Cong.   Superb acting from Burt Lancaster.

"The Odd Angry Shot" - an irreverent but in many ways surprisingly accurate portrayal (and the only one as well) of the Australian war in Vietnam.  Once you realise it is indeed a story, not an attempt to portray reality, it's an excellent movie.  I served just after Vietnam and the fact the military advisors on the making of the movie had served there, meant most of the details are correct.

"Zulu" - an excellent movie about the stresses of battle.  Often used by the Australian Army to portray the leadership qualities that it sought to instil in it's soldiers.

"Cross of Iron" - Sam Peckinpah at his best.  "The Wild Bunch" in WWII, on the Eastern Front from the German perspective and all the brutality you could ever want to see, portrayed onscreen.

"Kelly's Heroes" - Very funny but quite well done.  Good portrayal of how one determined man who refuses to conform can cut through the chaos of war and achieve his objective.

Indeed, Brian.

The best TV WWII drama series was 'Combat' with Vic Morrow.

Combat.

There was a realism about it that really sucked you in. It was filmed in black-and-white, intentionally or not, I don't know, but it gave the effect of documentary reality.

Very low budget, but extremely well done.

Herbie, "Combat!" was for it's time quite ground breaking.  It virtually created an entire genre and brought to the fore a new generation of actors and directors who used innovative ways to portray war on the screen.   Many now famous directors cut their teeth on "Combat!".

However, I'd suggest it's been surpassed by "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific".   Both are superbly written, directed and acted TV series, well worth watching.   Both break new ground again on the small screen for war movies/tv series.

It was a shame what happened to Vic Morrow.  He became typecast and found it hard to get work and then was killed tragically on the movie "Twilight Zone".   He was a much better actor IMO than Hollywood ever gave him the chance to show.

Brad Pitt in Fury.  Recent release.  Reviewed today here on the Sunshine Coast on the local FM station.  Rated 'B.'

'Viscerally violent' seemed to be the basic critique.

I guess it is a must watch for Aussie.

"No Country For Old Men"

Good movie.

Thing about Cormac McCarthy here is he left it hanging... I was wondering if there's be a sequel in which the walking embodiment of evil Mex and the old Sheriff fought it out...

Thing is - McCarthy's striving for real life and its brutality shows the simple truth that 'good' does not always triumph over 'evil'...

Hence the title.... very good film....

Oh - as for Corporal Upham at the end.. he shot only the 'bad' German, leaving the rest... any grunt who had seen those bastards shoot the wounded in cold blood etc would have killed the lot, lit a smoke, and pissed on their twitching bodies...

YTF would Upham allow those SS guys to walk away after Captain Miller died at the hands of the one HE allowed to walk away before?

I'll say no more. No more spoilers.

And of course, these delinquent pair of psychotic lions didn't give a rat's arse about the bleating goat tied to a stake. Hunger had nothing to do with their little games.
