The winner would have to be PJ Keating.

But why ?

The mere fact that he couldn't move in any direction without submitting a T/A claim form. His description of Darwin. The fact that he moved his family to Canberra yet still claimed the famous Canberra allowance in contravention of the ministerial standards.

The bloke was a gold plated grub. His financial skills were not up to the mark either.

Thanks Saladin (The Expected One; The Right Guided One) for your intelligent input. I have an appraisal of the Hawke-Keating locust years written up by a SMH journo (no friend of the Lib-NP). I might dig it out and also post the results of a Keating budget.

None of those points bring into question his abilities as treasurer. It just says he wasn't a nice bloke.

It isn't the case that he wasn't a nice bloke. He was a phuking grub. If I get time tomorrow I'll post that assessment and also Keating's 'bringing home the bacon' budget.

Given that Hockey is happy to allow Murdoch to pay less than 1% tax while he beats up the poor, the sick and the elderly Joe Hockey must be the most incompetent treasurer this country has ever seen.
And of course lets not forget that Hockey has managed to double the countries deficit while we are in the middle of a budget emergency

its a tough gig.
and getting tougher.
so many see the government as santa claus and with the baby boomers (a very selfish and spoilt generation) about to start asking for the big ticket items in pensions, gold standard healthcare, community services, its going to take a genuine stoic tough guy to set these people straight.

Hockey and Swan were/are not suited to this task, they cant explain things. one could look at swan losing to the miners over the mining super profits tax.  how could anyone be incapable of selling that to the public.
And Hockey with a $7 cost on the much loved bulk billing to go into some bizarre fund to do god knows what.

We need a real grey man, a real egghead stern old bank manager type (almost a father figure) to just say

"this is how its going to be kids"
"no toys for christmas for quite a while"

of all the treasurers, John Howard and Bill Hayden most fitted this mould.

i would put someone in as treasurer who just couldnt care less what the public thinks.

Morrison springs to mind

Monkey claims TA wherever he goes, even when accommodation and food are provided gratis. Grub was late for a caucus meeting last week because he made a BS visit to Peter Mac cancer centre FOR THE PURPOSE OF CLAIMING TA. Hokey claims TA for staying in his own Canberra house!

None of that has to do with skill as Treasurer.

We have all enjoyed the 22 years of low inflation growth engineered by Keating.

Not one of them has fitted the bill required of them in trust by the people of Australia - each and every one since Keating has lead this country down the garden path of enrichment for themselves and their cronies while abandoning their obligations and duties to the people.

They've used fancy words and lofty ideals - often cloaked in sheep's raiment but bearing wolves - to sneak across the line and convince the gullible that they are doing a good job on their behalf.... but the proof is right there in front of your eyes in the social and economic catastrophe we live in daily as it slides downhill into the abyss.

NONE of them is or was worth a cracker.

Calling for a report is easy. Doubt Howard ever read the Wallis enquiry report.

Keating could get the reforms through, Howard didn’t even try. Did NOT even try!

Neither Howard not Costello did ANYTHING useful with their record revenue, they pissed $350Bn away against the wall. That is the only conclusion you can come to and that is why Costello, who had the easiest time of all the five Treasurers, is easily the worst.

And H&C didn’t save anything, all their surpluses got spent on tax cuts and pork.

Really? No reforms? What about the GST? What about the numerous other reforms to taxation, superannuation, workplace laws and so on? Costello the worst? You're deluded if you think that the Treasurer who paid off Keatings' $96bn debt, produced surpluses in all but one of his budgets and created the future fund is the worst Treasurer when compared to Swan's disastrous term of not a single surplus, the largest deficits ever, the largest debt ever combined with insanity such as tripling the tax-free threshold, destroying investment in the mining industry with the carbon and mining taxes and wasting taxpayer funds on $900 cheques to dead people with borrowed money! No reasonable person could possibly come to the conclusion you have - NO ONE.
