I would MUCH rather have a $6000 car and a bike like that than a $12000 car

Wood composite can be very strong and light.

Probably have to varnish it to protect from UV or timber will become sunbleached.

It looks like titanium wins for bicycle design:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_frame

Quote:
Titanium is perhaps the most exotic and expensive metal commonly used for bicycle frame tubes. It combines many desirable characteristics, including a high strength to weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance. Reasonable stiffness (roughly half that of steel) allows for many titanium frames to be constructed with "standard" tube sizes comparable to a traditional steel frame, although larger diameter tubing is becoming more common for more stiffness. Titanium is more difficult to machine than steel or aluminum, which sometimes limits its uses and also raises the effort (and cost) associated with this type of construction. As titanium frames are usually more expensive than similar steel or aluminium alloy frames, the cost puts them out of reach for most cyclists.

I'm reading a book about the 1914 Giro d'Italia, the bikes had steel frames, WOODEN wheels and no gears.

The first stage, from Milan to Cuneo was 428kms and the winner took nearly 17.5 hours to complete it. The average stage distance was 396kms and the shortest was 385kms.

A nice warm up for the Tour de France, n'est pas?

plastic .......... probably be good, get the right sort of plastic.
I use plastic here on many things we work on, it's VERY good.

it does not 'vibrate loose' as steel does.
You can put threads on it.
it'ld not vibrate as much as a steel frame does.
Titanium gives a harsh ride.

Ah - thats why people us carbon fibre.
that's good.

I had an old english bike of "Reynolds 531' tubing.
VERY good.
