Palmer Deals New Blow To Dole Plan

Clive Palmer deals new blow to dole plan

CLIVE Palmer may have given the kiss of death to the Abbott government’s apparent compromise on tough new dole rules for young unemployed people.

To try to win crossbench support for its changes, the government might accept reducing from six months to one its initial waiting period plan for Newstart payments.

But that’s not good enough for the Palmer United Party.   Smiley

“If we support those things, we have got to say are we in favour of increased youth suicide or are we in favour of increased crime,” Mr Palmer told reporters.

Nor does the government have the backing of another key crossbencher.

“I wouldn’t support allowing a genuine jobseeker to have to wait for (even) one day,” Family First senator Bob Day said.

The government needs six crossbench votes to have its changes clear parliament in time for their planned rollout on January 1.

COMPROMISE: A shorter wait

Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews said he was prepared to negotiate with anyone who understood the taxpayer cannot subsidise people who didn’t want to work or train.

“This is not an earn-or-starve provision, this is an earn-or-learn provision,” he said.

The welfare sector hopes Mr Palmer will stay true to his word in what it says is a “high stakes” game on young peoples’ lives.

The Australian Council of Social Services cautioned the government against copying New Zealand, which imposes a one-month wait for welfare.

“The message we’re hearing (from there) is that it’s ugly,” chief executive Cassandra Goldie told reporters in Canberra.   Sad

The Australian Greens say even a one-month wait is a recipe for homelessness.

Jobseekers of any age already have to wait a week before being able to claim income support.

So a young person who can't find a job doesn't want to work? Really? Either he's wearing his tinfoil hat, he's living in the past or he's got no real world experience.

Youth unemployment averages about 12%. In some areas is over 20%. Not because they don't want to work, but because they can't find jobs.

They don't need to get a job. If they go into a course to study they can get a government allowance for that, plus assistance for things like books, fees, accommodation, etc. Stop being so blind and open your eyes!

And what of those who don't want to study and want to work? These people should be punished because a few bludgers are living the high life on $13,520 a year?

If Clive does this favour for the Abbott govt - ie. saving them from a disastrous policy move - will he have done enough do you think?
Can he go away after that. I'm sure most people think he's overstayed his welcome.

Who pays your bills? The money fairy?

If they have already studied, what then? Another course? And another? And another? Doesn't work. The government won't fund multiple courses of the same or lower level. Even if the government did allow multiple courses, employers will use the stupid "overqualified" excuse to keep the job seekers out of work.

Yep - hand it out now with borrowed money and worry about paying it back later - or better yet, leave it for the next guy to worry about. That IS, after all, what Labor has done!

So just so we're clear armchair - paying jobseekers unemployment benefits is an outrageous imposte to the taxpayer - but paying them to take up completely useless courses that they don't need and won't increase their employment prospects - is not?

It's actually Armhair's ... he's asserting they don't need a job? Then why are they looking for work?

Welfare is nothing but a ransom that the banksters (through governments) pay to the unemployed, the sick and the unenslavable in order to prevent a people's revolution. Governments are ordered by the global banksters to give the oppressed just enough welfare to keep them quiet (fed and drunk) so they don't storm out to the streets and start overthrowing the governments. It has NOTHING to do with goodwill, sympathy or anything like that. It's an ice cold calculation to keep the financial elite in power. Welfare serves the richest 0.001%. If welfare is stopped, people starve, their survival instinct kicks in and in their hunger, anger and despair they overthrow the entire system. The politicians, banksters, oligarchs get round up, dispossessed and hung upside down in the streets.
