Average ULP price - $1.49

http://www.aip.com.au/pricing/retail/ulp/national.htm

Average diesel - %1.56
http://www.aip.com.au/pricing/retail/diesel/

eeeeeewwwwww, that's MUCH closer than I thought it would be.

A big trip around Auss towing a significant weight.
Say, 20,000 kms.

Petrol cruiser gets 30 L/100kms.
30L/100kms * 200 = 6000 L * $1.49 = $8940

Diesel cruiser gets 20L/100kms
20* 200 = 4000L * $1.56 = $ 6240.
VERY significant difference. $2700 !!!

The $15K cheaper purchase price lasts for 5 1/2  20,000km trips around Auss.
110,000 kms and the cheaper purchase price is eroded.

The diesel will have a better resale price than the petrol.
But it's still coming down from a 'greater' height.
ie, I'ld expect the $15K gap to narrow.

At the local bowser this morning prices were much diferent.

ULP =1.29, diesel = 1.53
That'll give a different picture.

Petrol 6000L * 1.29 = $7740
Diesel 4000 L * 1.53 = $6120.

Difference of $1620.
A purchase price differential of $15,000+

The petrol wins hands down.

You should consider gas, or get a petrol and convert it to gas.

Or one of those engines that runs on used 'deep-fry' fish-n-chip oil ...

Or steam power.  Cool

Solar Power?

Or GET SPONSORSHIP and allow stickers to be plastered all over your vehicle for free petrol.

Phone around to some of the big companies.

Harvey Norman. Qantas. Coles. Woolies. "EAT AT JOE'S". "A Touch of Class" (Brothel). "Madame Lash 24/7 for Corrective Therapy".

Etc.

Rip the arse off the car when you're halfway across the Nullabor.

Woody - thanks. That's remarkably good.

I heard 80 - 90 Kms/hr gives a much better fuel usage.
Energy usage rises exponentially as the speed increases over abut 85 km/h.
So to go 20% faster requites 40% more energy
The figures I used are 'standard' ones given in various areas.
They might well assume 100 or 110 km/h

...

Quote:
1) Increasing air resistance. According to CNN, "Pushing air around actually takes up about 40% of a car's energy at highway speeds. Traveling faster makes the job even harder...The increase is actually exponential, meaning wind resistance rises much more steeply between 70 and 80 mph than it does between 50 and 60. "

2) Engines are designed for specific speed, temperature, and rpm ranges. Driving out of these ranges goes against the fundamental design of the engine.

being a Diesel Mechanic for around 30 years, and service manager for the past 13 years, I can assure you that servicing any modern diesel at 5000 is an utter waste of time and money...

use a decent oil and minimum of 10,000 kilometre servicing is fine..

I services our coaches at around 20,000 although one blew out to 27,000 just recently while doing a power of work... its fine..

we have 2 new Mercedes Valente's which are programed to be serviced every 30,000 kilometres...

we have a hiace that's been doing over 100,000 kilometres a year and I've been servicing it every 15,000 kilometres and it now has 590,000 kilometres on the clock... I've changed two sets of front shockers, one alternator belt and one fuel pump... I changed the timing belt every 150,000 so a few of those... and that's about it apart from normal servicing... oil, filter and fuel filter...

work out your running costs on that..

oh, and we changed the alternator on it recently..

thanks true, I believe the newer diesels are 10 - 15 Kms for a service.

buying a campervan - I had not quite considered it.
I had a look at the full blown motorhomes or converted buses.
The motor homes were very expensive, converted buses did not look right to me.

A campervan might be a viable method.
Stay in cabins wherever you can, use the campervan when desired for sleeping in ?

I had a look into this as i have part time work in the bush which usually lasts for 2-3 days at a time.

I looked at motorhomes, they are very expensive, i looked at caravans which still have the hassle with towing.

I decided on a slide on camper, i can remove it easily and leave it for a base which still allows me to use my Hilux extra cab.
I can also tow a trailer while using this slide on camper.

I have a new Hilux extra cab with turbo diesel, it gets about 7-8L/100Km on the hwy and around 9-10L/100Km around town, great 4wd goes anywhere

Bought a 'fathers day' car for myself Smiley

Another camry. 2008, $6500.
It's not the right time for me to buy the 'round Aussie vehicle' yet.

The camrys pretty good. 5 speed auto, nice ride, good motor, good chassis.
I could not stomach having $20K tied up in a car.
This'll give toyota reliability.
