There should be a special Hell reserved for people

... who write instruction manuals that simply don't explain in CLEAR language and in a COMPLETE manner how you are supposed to set something up, or work something.

I have a manual on how to operate a sewing machine I bought.

For the first couple of times I operated it I had no real problem setting up where the two threads go (the above and below threads), somehow I fluked it ~ but now I can't remember what I did ... and the Instruction Manual
(sic)
leaves out a vital piece of information that I need to know in order to attach the lower thread to the upper thread.

I'm going to have to explore Google to find an answer ~ and that really pisses me off when I have the Instruction Manual
(sic)
here on the table.

Do you have the shuttle filled and in place with a bit of cotton protruding?

Do you have the top thread in place and through the needle??

If yes to both, turn the wheel forward, the needle will move down and the threads should attach...

good luck!!!

Thank you, Alinta ~ it's very kind of you to try to put me out of my misery.

But ... I've tried this repeatedly without success.

Where should the bottom thread be when you lower the needle down to do the 'draw up'?

I've tried every which way without success.

(Incidentally, my Instruction Manual
(sic)
says the wheel should be turned towards me ... anti-clockwise. I can't think why it matters which way).

I'm also noticing that good lighting is essential. I now have a powerful lamp supplementing the feeble light that comes with the sewing machine. Everything is fiddly, microscopic, and miniature.  Smiley

The bottom thread should be correctly in the shuttle with a few cms protruding.

Yep...anticlockwise is correct......I should have said turn towards you ....on my machine the threads do not pick up if the wheel is turned clockwise.

My machine is 20 years old........if you tell me the make/model of yours I could check out the manual and try to see what's missing...........

If it's a relatively normal operating machine, the bottom thread should have its end hanging out of the front (closest edge towards you) of the flap thing that covers where you load the bobbin.

Well... that's how its worked on all of the machines I've seen... granted... they were probably circa 1970s machines.

Without a bit of material to test it on, you'll find nothing happens to the bottom thread if you give the top needle a few cycles.

Sewing machines and the manuals that come with it are for women.

Women understand the manuals.

I was waiting for that.

Sewing machines are actually beautiful machines that have been designed from primitive beginnings to the sophisticated things that they are today ~ by scores of hairy-chested men.

Same with clocks and watches.

wrong wrong wrong ... The manual says the end must come out towards the back.

But WHERE towards the back? I've tried laying it within the 'grab-railings' ~ and outside of these - with no success.

I just managed to get the top thread to 'take-up' the bottom thread ... but I'm still none the wiser. I have no idea why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

If I had a proper workshop I'd like to re-design sewing machines so they ....
waaaaaait for it .......
thread themselves automatically at the touch of a button.  Smiley

It's no help.

I'll just have to keep on with trial-and-error.

Okay, towards the back then.

It shouldn't be over those 2 little grab things that move the material along. That external length of thread isn't what gets picked up.

I think...
...it's been ages since I played with a sewing machine.

I assume you're using a bit of material to test this...

Yes.

It's a matter of pot-luck until I find out the correct way to do it. It's sad that the manual that came with the machine does not give the detains on this particular matter.

It's a 'bit of a worry', I know.

I used to think the same thing about guys wearing earrings, and gold necklaces, and rings, and pink shirts, and After Shave lotion, and designer hair-does, and all the rest of it.

The stereotypes no longer hold true. I actually use and wear none of the above.

Two butch married men I know in this street told me they wouldn't get another family cat after theirs had died because it was too painful to go through the experience of losing one again. That really surprised me.

I've had cats put down at the vets. Tomorrow's another day ...

You're a country bloke, Lionel. It's 'sissy' to still have all your own teeth by age 35 out there, and if you're not fighting drunk at least once a month there must be something wrong with you.  Tongue

You mean:-

"before extrublulating priehilionic equaliser, ensure balungist retaining nut is secure, then apply even pressure to both left and right fabriquinators AT THE SAME TIME to avoid obflascitation of the Phasbrook rempiculator module.

Then refarscatate the remplicitic segasonde twice... your module is now ready to play!

In the event this does not achieve optimum performance, simply re-do Steps 1 to 5.

**Note that technical support is no longer available for the Model 451/OP7-9 Mark IV or the Super Rempisonde 408."
